Sketchup to Blender 2.8x

Hi All,

I just want to find out what most efficient workflow is for exporting models from sketchup to blender 2.8. The current process is to use the 2.79 sketchup importer then copy and past the model into 2.8. Is this still the case or has a different workflow been developed. My workplace have a library of models in Sketchup which we would like to reuse to create some simple animations in Blender. Thanks in advance.

I sometimes export Sketchup models into Blender for rendering in Cycles. Workflow i use.

  1. Cleanup the models first in Sketchup.
  2. Make sure that all materials are correctly named so you can find them later in Blender for tweaking.
  3. Make sure all textures are correctly applied to the models as required.
  4. Make sure any mesh withing Sketchup that is not required to be exported is hidden.
  5. Then export using the obj exporter in Sketchup.
  6. Then use the obj importer in Blender.Within Blenders obj importer there are two options. The Basic is importing as just 1 mesh. There is also an option within the importer to have the mesh broken down into the various mesh's created within your model ( but not the groups or components created in sketchup).

Be aware that no camera's are exported from the scene positions in Sketchup. The mesh along with the assigned materials then import cleanly in to Blender with all UV mapping done in Sketchup still correctly applied. You will need to set up any cameras you require in Blender and tweak the materials in the principled shader in Blender ..IE Metals / Glass etc. Hope that helps.

For Reference I use Sketchup 2017 and Blender 2.8 or now 2.81

* @mikebaldwin1954 * Thanks for the reply, it's quite similar to my workflow. Pity that there isn't a more streamlined way.

you can get the cameras using 3ds export from skp.
