No you don't miss anything, for this reason I call it "Handmade". If I am not mistaken the principle is similar.
Trying this addon
blendermarket.com/products/voxel-heat-diffuse-skinning
, in the video model it gave me an error when calculating the influences, and for this reason I tried this method.
Previously I did something similar to put an HD model in pose.
I'm trying to understand what geodesic voxels have to do with this. I watched this video a couple of times and in the end all I got from it is that you automatically weighted a low poly mesh and then transferred the weights all using Blender's standard tools. Is there something I'm missing?

I have created a manual method to improve the assignment of bone influences to the vertices.
The model is by Javier Casado, and the Bone Studio version of Blender has been used to improve and simplify the voxelation process, although it is not necessary.
The video is not commented, but it is short.
It would be very good if some programmer could automate the task, it works better than the Surface-Heat-Diffuse-Skinning addon.

Test if you want the following file and you will see that it works much better than directly automatic painting by default, even if it is part of the process. blenderartists.org/t/the-new-animation-system-2020-character-animation-system/1146794/130
