Hey Pablo. You and the team over at Blender have been doing an amazing job adding game changing new features and making it more powerful than ever, but I am no so easily impressed. I NEED the ability to change the color of objects and collections in the outliner like I need air to breath Pablo. Please, * when * or * is * this feature coming to Blender so I can finally live a full life :( )?

Thanks Pablo..! I'm counting on you :P

I have a plan to make a petition to bring back the T & N Panels from 2.7x, everything was one click away with 2.8x they are hidden in menus..etc and takes more clicks to do and you have to remember their places & Blender became as slow as other 3d Softwares ,what's the devs reason to change this one part that worked so well for users and now destroying that speed that we had in the past with those Active tools that nobody use even the ones at the Studio, what does it take to fix this,a petiton, a bribe, a big Studio or the whole community ???

5
Silas

* @Cobra * Please dont.. I think its just a matter of getting used to it and this option is faster... You can do an addon when you really want it but the current system is in my opinion better when you worked a bit with it..

1
Cobra

* @SilaS * Better at what? eveything on Sidebars are useless because you like it doesn't mean others should and Addons can't fix the big issue with Active tools..etc all options are now are in Menus which requires to go to them to even get basic tools, i can't work with this way and slows me down, for example Mark sharp,Seam..etc i use them all the time when they where on the T Panel which i keep it open, now i have either go to the Menu or use Ctrl+E for every single time that's a huge step back from what it was before...etc they either fix this with full customization or we'll have to make a petiton to get our voices heard.

1
Josephbburg Author

* @Cobra * Do you use quick favorites?

1
Cobra

* @Josephbburg * Yes and the list is big but i don't use it all the time, i like to have something always open and only one click away, if we can have full customization where we can put our favorite options on a custom panel on any side or something then that would be perfect.

1
thinsoldier

* @Cobra * You can literally hire a developer to make you an addon that puts whatever you want in a sidebar. Everything you miss from 2.7x and even things you wish you hade in the sidebar but were not there. You can probably get 75% of what you want in an addon yo make yourself after a few weekends of coding.

I have two questions, if this is alright:

  • Will Edge Groups ever be added to the Object Data Properties? They would be really useful for certain operations, like using the Bevel and Edge Split modifiers, since Vertex Groups are not good at handling this.

  • I have noticed that some useful shortcuts that exist in Blender are missing from the program's UI. For example the key to change the Viewport Shading to Wireframe, or the keys we can use to change a Brush's radius and strength, when painting or sculpting. Also many shortcuts that are available to the user when using certain tools, like the key for deselecting a single Edge, among many selected edges, that were supposed to appear on the Status Bar, but don't. Will any more shortcuts like these be added to the UI?

5
damian_winnichenko

* @Constantina32 * vote for missing hotkeys as well. I even sent it as a bug but got a response as it is irrelevant =(

2
thinsoldier

* @Constantina32 * Shift+Z toggles wireframe view. In sculpt and paint modes F changes brush radius and Shift+F changes brush strength.

Constantina32

* @thinsoldier * Thank you for the tips! Still, it is important for these shortcuts to appear in the UI's tooltips, both for new users, and for old users that have already too many shortcuts to remember and could always use such useful reminders.

what you are guys going to do about the performance difference on Windows & Linux majority of Blender users are on Windows but the 2.8x seems not performing well on Windows, is the Blender Foundation going to let it be like this were it's almost 50% difference? otherwise we would jump to other Softwares who has DirectX support which runs things much faster on Windows because people can't just switch OS and lose everything that they have on the other.

4
mau.memoli

* @zinogg * This is a fairly common issue. Even Maya performs much better in Linux. Was 2.79 being significantly slower than Linux in Windows?

Josephbburg Author

* @zinogg *

people can't just switch OS and lose everything that they have on the other.

If you lose everything when you switch, you're doing it wrong. I dual boot, and it's a little hard to do with Windows but it's possible-- even if you use a USB for your Linux install.

The question is, what is Windows going to do? It's the Windows driver that is slow, because it hogs resources. I think it's called DDMC.

thinsoldier

* @zinogg * Donate money and tell them to hire someone to fix your problem..

Pascal

* @mau.memoli * Maya uses both DirectX & Opengl and runs much faster with DirectX since it's native on Windows.

1
Pascal

* @Josephbburg * dual boot to just use blender is not a good solution.

1
zinogg

* @thinsoldier * that's just rude, i don't have ton of money to give to them , lots of people and companies are supporting them & like i said even most blender users are on Windows so it's a necessity that they fix this problem for everybody not just for me and i believe they now have more full time developers who can look onto this.

zinogg

* @Josephbburg * I don't like dual boot , i like to use one OS only 2.79 didn't have this problem only 2.80 so it must be from Blender side not Windows.

Josephbburg Author

* @PK_GO * That's not what I'm doing. I use Linux because I like it. Also, I have a computer to just to make stuff. Most of my apps work on Linux, most of them work better. You could more rightly say I have Windows just to use Marvelous Designer.

@zinogg As I stated earlier, I don't think it's something to fix. Windows is what's slowing down Blender, not the other way around. The version difference doesn't prove otherwise. Blender's drawing system and depsgraph have been re-written. The drawing system's use of newer OpenGl standards may very well be the source of friction between it and DDMC. Blender is using more resources now in almost every metric- CPU, RAM, GPU. The new capabilities come at a cost.

But of course, it's all very new. There's definitely some bugs that need to be ironed out. And they should be! But this isn't nearly as important as undo performance, for example. There's the priority issue, and I don't think either of us know all that goes into that. I (personally) think it's a little mistaken to change Blender to work better with proprietary software when the same resources could be used just to make Blender better. Free software thrives in a free software environment. That's its primary target.

But to be clear, if there's something in Blender's code that isn't working well on Windows-- that's a bug. Otherwise, it's a Windows feature.

Hi, Pablo! Thanks for your shows! I'd say, it's much better than TV :D and much more helpful than anti-depressants! Just kidding!

Quick proposal and one feature request for future versions:

  1. Let's rename Monkey Mesh to Suzanne. Let's give her some respect!
  2. Could you discuss with developers about the "switch map" node? (image attached) It could be huge timesaver for such procedural effect as having different maps on random objects with just one material. It`ll help to add some variations to instanced objects, for example, random leave maps on trees.

Thanks!

Can you tell me Facial Orientation what codes the facial orientation color is encoded in? Since you do not want to give us the option to change color in Blender 2.8X.

Hi Pablo! Thanks for the show !! Thanks to all the developers !!!

How to find out that the developers read your post in a right click select? There are basic things to fix, such as this: Curve Shape 3D: Consistent Bevel Shape

Developers define them as not important or should be written elsewhere?

Hey Pablo! Great to see you back live, we missed you, you know?

I was wondering about tangent animations work on light linking. Is that purely being worked on by them, and once it's finished they would submit it for review? Do we know what's going on there? Light linking is the single thing I'm missing in blender.

2
Josephbburg Author

* @daniellapalme * Light linking would be so, so good in EEVEE.

How to flip the File Name to the top in the save window? If I maximise the window, the File Name won't show. I don't think that is a bug, but it is annoying, and why did you move it to the bottom of the screen? Way not let us flip it to the top?

sr0rr3

* @DeadDragon * isn't it your windows panel setting that tells it to be on top of fullscreened windows?

Xdragon5502

* @Yegor Smirnov * this is not fullscreen

sr0rr3

* @DeadDragon * I meant maximized

Xdragon5502

* @Yegor Smirnov * This only happens whit the save panel. Blender can be maximized, but the save panel cannot

Hola Pablo,

Nice to have you back :). Any news on UDIM support?

1
eduardorh.usana

Hola Pablo, espero te encuentres bien. By any chance could you give some update about udim support. Im also salivating about this. Already ditched Autodesk software because blender allow me to to have faster workfkow for Archviz. But Im really miss the udim features. Thanks.

Josephbburg Author

* @eduardorh.usana * UDIM is planned for 2.82 AFAIK. February 2020 is the planned release. Note though, that new features are being added to 2.82 already, so if you're willing to use a daily build for a while, it might be ready sooner.

Any news about fixing undo?

Hey Pablo, Would it be possible to add the beta release builds to Steam, so that if we opt in to the beta, we can keep it up to date automatically?

Amaranth is a mess? Not since i fixed tons of problems, or you mean something else?

Hey Pablo! Great to see so many improvements coming to blender 2.81. However, as someone who has used CAD software, it would be a god send if support for CAD files such as IGES, STEP to be supported in the import option. I was wondering if it would be very hard to implement such features?

mau.memoli

Hi Pablo, I am transitioning from maya to to blender, so far is working great, but there is one thing that really cripples my workflow. So far I could not find a modifiers that makes a simple live connection between two meshes or more. The closest thing I could find is the surface deform, but it is really slow and over kill for what I need. It would be nice to have a simple modifier that takes as input one or more meshes and inherit their vertex transformations. A bit like the blendshapes work in Maya.

1
Josephbburg Author

* @mau.memoli * I have a script that makes an armature modifier do this, as a sort of hack. There isn't an easy way to do this. But you can join the mesh as a shape key.

Modifiers are in the process of being turned into nodes, this sort of thing should be possible in the new system.

Also, why is surface deform slow? It shouldn't be.

mau.memoli

* @mau.memoli * Thanks for answering my question! That's not really what I meant anyway. I should explain myself better next time : )

michael

* @mau.memoli * Is it "Lattice" you are looking for? There is an object type and the corresponding modifier for the object you want to deform.

visitorsama

* @mau.memoli * If what you are looking for are blendshapes I think the equivalent in blender is the Shape Keys, it is not a modifier:

easyblend.org/html/animation/shape_keys.html

Take a look, maybe they serve you, if you want to encourage them you can use drivers:

docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/animation/drivers/index.html

brandon3D

* @mau.memoli * Alt D?maybe

quinn.kazamaki

* @mau.memoli * yeah blend shapes in maya are pretty much exactly the same as shape keys in blender, except that in maya all the data is taken from outside the mesh. in blender, the shape keys are stored within the object itself. it will change the mesh in edit mode depending on what shape key you have selected in the mesh data tab. and then when you are in object mode you can blend between each shape key live.

Josephbburg Author

Blend Shapes are really cool- they can actually be used to deform things indirectly. For example, make a blend shape (B) for object A. Put a deformer on object B. Object A now deforms exactly like object B.

So Blend shapes are like shape keys that can exist within a deformer stack, and have deformation stacks of their own (there's nothing like modifiers in Maya, of course).

This is one of the few features Maya does right. Of course, there are ways of getting the same results in Blender, but it takes a different way of approaching problems.

Hey Pablo, I'd like to know if there is any plans for making particles info node work with EEVEE. And also Grease pencil material passes to work as well. Love the lives, thank you for doing it.

is there/could ther be a version of blender 2.80/81 that dosen't require openGL3.3?

1
Pascal

Hi Pablo glad you're back, What's the status of Performance is it planned for 2.82? also we need more polished modeling tools like in Modo or C4D, thanks.

Hi Pablo,

  • Is There a chance to see anisotropy working with Eevee Soon?
  • And Do you have an idea of when we can expect the Ctrl-Z to be fixed/faster

Thank you for all the great work on Blender, love your lives :)

Hey Pablo! Have you experienced this bug developer.blender.org/T66529 ? Cause you stumble upon that as you try to render almost any animation and it stops me from switching to 2.8x. Long story short: motion blur glitches from frame to frame on rotating objects.

* @DB3D * Without actually reading anything many people will assume the support version has things that the free version does not have. They will assume any number of annoying limitations that they have experienced in other software and will quickly move on to the next google search result tab for "free 3d program" and hope the next one is just free and nothing else.

Josephbburg Author

* @thinsoldier * I would assume that I'm buying a technical support contract.

Buenas a todos una semana mas :)

¿Cuando se agregará de nuevo la opción de "Clay render", creo que antes era un add-on oficial, mi amor por los renders en color blanco o crema esta insatisfecho 💔

rj_guetzkow

The delete feature for folders was not done in time for 2.81. I'll implement it as soon as I can and it will likely be available in 2.82.

i have created comps for a toolshelf you can see it on dev talk " devtalk.blender.org/t/maya-style-tool-shelf-and-quick-favorites-management/9204/3 " but it does not seem to have any traction what can i do to get it reviewed and maybe have a serious discussion to implement

Hi Pablo, great livestream! I also use CAD programs. I mostly use Rhino for accurate architectural modeling and Blender for rendering, I have 2 questions:

  1. Are there any plans to add better snapping and even a clipping plane to Blender like in Sketchup?
  2. I know that the rhino developers have been working on an import addon for blender, do you know anything about this?

Thanks very much!

deodatopr

Hola Pablo gusto de verte de nuevo ! I would like to know if the 2.8X version will get back the AO Vertex Bake again? only in 2.79 is this option :(

ruthwik.coupdegrace

Hey, Pablo! I had a small doubt regarding multi-view sculpting. I notice edit mode has live update based on transformation whereas sculpt mode updates after each stroke? Would live stroke update be possible or is that too performance heavy? Link to a small video showing what I mean. :) twitter.com/rao_ruthwik/status/1183490724525793281

Hi Pablo Am glad your back and doing this regularly

Nd i wanted to ask about an Addon called snap utilities the developer Germano Cavalcante is currently working at blender "working to implement precision modeling features directly in @Blender." and until then he has removed the plugin from the blender market but I think due to time constraints He haven’t yet implemented the tools natively in blender 2.81 so until that happens, I was wondering if it was possible to include the Addon with the blender software as it is. it’s a really really awesome Addon for ArchViz and general parametric modeling.

I am doing a lot of normal editng, even manual. I can do what i need to do but sometimes its highly inefficent.

need proportinal editing for things like rotating normals, or point to target. rotating normals evenly outwards, not just on one axis. (something like rotating along the face normal or so) maybe haveing values for x/y/z like you have in the item window. you have x/y/z values if you use the "point to target" but these values are total and not in relation to its current position. And it doesnt work for individual normals, it will apply to all normals. (in other words) i can not let normals point "more down evenly" wich is problematic if you have a edge loop that is a bit weirdly formed for example. you can not controll the "split ammount" of vertecis. you can not rotate the vertex, will rotate both normals. you can not rotate the edge, will rotate all 4 normals. you CAN rotate the face, it will not rotate the normal of the other face BUT it will rotate all 4 verteci normals of that face. you can smooth the vector but it will move both normal, also not optimal. need a option to controll the split ammount.

point to target needs something like a offset so they dont point directly at this one point but point a bit more streight. there might be more. maybe like in particle edit haveing a brush tool or so but this is the most important stuff i could think of, wich i feel is missing.

mirror function

maybe also a "spread" function

Thanks for the show and your hard work!

About file browser improvements: Could we please get a warning before overwriting files? I have accidentally lost files many times, by overwriting saves or accidentally exporting instead of importing. Maybe I'm just particularly careless, but I guess there must be more careless people out there.

Also, any news on object based motion blur in Eevee?
