Well of course master is now 2.81 alpha, it's the next upcoming version. Master is always the upcoming version.

* this is true from Blender 2.80, untill 2.80 release the master contained bugfixes of the stable version and the new version was developed in a new distinct branch, the development version was merged into master before release, IIRC

Blender 2.80 was announced on the meeting notes for Monday to be released today July 30th.
at release of Stable version, developers start new cycle of developing with a 2.81alpha. it is normal if next release is 2.81
With the impending release, master branch is now 2.81!
