Q&A: CODE DIVE #2! - Blender Everyday

Hola desde buenos aires! thanks for making these code dives! As an aspiring developer it's really useful!

Straight to the question. Are there any plans or ideas about making Sound nodes for the speaker object/VSE? I'm interested in developping that side of blender, so that the sound editing part of the moviemaking workflow can stay somewhat inhouse and you can drive values with MIDI, or trigger sound filters with 3D events, like collisions. Is that something that would be accepted to be discussed by blender development? If I make a design, is developer.blender.org the place to post it or should it already be a coded patch?

Sorry for all the questions, i just haven't found much information about these things, thanks!

* @gorro.rojo * maybe you should go to the #VSE channel on blender.chat

* @gorro.rojo * Maybe you'll finde some inspiration in these projects: github.com/nomelif/Audionodes and devtalk.blender.org/t/clockworx-music-nodes-some-issues-to-solve/11845 And when it comes to adding effects to the sounds, apparently there are already plenty in the lib used by Blender, but they're not exposed in neither the vse nor as nodes: github.com/neXyon/audaspace You should properly try to reach out to neXyon(audaspace) or ISS(VSE Maintainer) to get some feedback on your ideas. Or/and join the VSE chat(ISS hangs out there).

hello Pablo, hello Dalai,

I just want to shout out to you. Thank you very much for the AlmostBlenderEveryday! Last week I installed Ubuntu and CentOS on a cortual machine and tried to compile Blender from the ground up (somehow it didn't work on CentOS). But it's fun to get my hands wet and slowly getting statet.

I can also recommended to everybody. Blender works way faster on Linux!

Hi Dalai, Hi Pablo! It's good to see Code Dive again on the air.

I have one proposal for Pablo, and one question for Dalai:

  1. Pablo, you asked us what did we think about the streams, if there's anything you could change for the better. So, we have already "Blender Today", "Blender Recap", and "Blender Everyday". What about "Blender Yesterday"? Tell us about Blender 1.0, or new features of Blender 2.4. How it was?

  2. Dalai, I'm getting myself familiar with the blender source code, but sometimes I feel dumb and stuck in a dead-end. F.e. if I want to add some new parameter to an operator. What is the best practice to track the way from Blender menu item to the exact code line or file?

Thanks a lot!

just want to say thanks to you and Dalai with your advices I can build my own blender and apply patch with arcanist, now I patch all the time :) And of course I'll try to report bug and stuff on devleloper page.

Hi Dalai, and Pablo. Where is the best place to find any high level design diagrams showing the structure of the Blender code?

Hi Pablo and Dalai. Thanks for all the effort in making these videos, I am looking forward to every episode. I have a question regarding compiling blender. I am just starting out and it usually takes me around an hour or longer to compile blender. I use the make commands with windows. Can you explain a little bit what different ways of compiling blender exist and which one you would use after changing a few lines of code (Preferably for Windows). Is there a way to compile only changed files and how?

Additionally, I would really enjoy to have a guest from the AAA games industry. Jeremy Estrellado (from the dinusty empire discord and YouTube channel) is a potential guest that comes to my mind is. A lot of AAA game artists are switching or looking into blender and it would be nice to hear more from this area.

* @Matthias Patscheider * You could use ccache to speed up the compilation process. Thereby you compile all files only once and when you make changes, only those files will be compiled, which have changes. All other files will be loaded from the cache.

SimonL.

Always wanted to help with blender development for the past years. The recent videos on development were really inviting, so i finally made a small improvement (showing accumulated render time for animation-renders).

I have a few questions on how to go on with this:

  • I noticed a small bug in the same function (in some case the separation character between two render statistics is not drawn)

Should i submit a separate patch for that or are you fine with "feature+closely related bugfix"-patches? (i would consider separate patches are better style, but they also introduce more review overhead)

  • How to know who would be a good reviewer for my patch? (UI?, Rendering?)

Hi Pablo. hi Dalai!

Some newer parts of Blender, as depsgraph, fluid simulation (and particle nodes if I remeber correclty) are written in C++.

Are there some specific things for which that is a necessary choice for those cases or is this a design decision to slowly move to a "newer" language?

lets4done

Hope all is good there Questions 1 What editor are you using for c and c++ 2. How many lines of code are there? Approximately. In python, c and c++ 3. Talk about extensions. What do u use or find helpful or unique etc.

Is there a good reference for adding shader nodes? I want to add a node that does a Colortemp/lumens to blender light color/Strength converter based on Jonathan Lampels recent add-on

Hi Pablo. Where should we suggest ideas for Blender Today topics? For example, I think a Q&A episode for each major section of Blender would be great, would allow us to ask section specific questions.

As for an actual question; has there been any discussion about changing the default scene?

-Hi Pablo and Dalai, desde Don Torcuato, Argentina! :) I have two code related questions for viewport optimization -1) Is it to difficult to add Occlusion Culling for Eevee ?? -2)Is it posible codding a separete option for Eevee viewport quality setting (texture limit size, anti aliasing) and eevee final render?

1
Emi_Martinez

* @Emi_Martinez * Occlusion Culling it's done but in cycles

Hi, I‘ve heard code merging is not that easy so I was wondering how the code from Blender is getting merged. For example how you merge where bugfixes from 2.82b to the new features in 2.83a? Or do you?

1
ronsn

* @soerensc * It is easy if developer A changes one file and developer B changes another file. It can become difficult when dev A and B making changes at the same file. Therefore dev A or B or another developer has to merge the changes manually. That is why it's sometimes better to make changes in one file one after the other. Bug fixes are similar. If the changes are in files that are untouched since the previous version it is easy. Otherwise some dev has to merge the changes manually, or write a new patch for the new version.

agfviggiano

Hi all

Are there any plans to introduce Shader Nodes -> Plain Text conversion (and vice versa) integration in Blender? This would allow us to easily use a SCM such as git to track the progress of what today is only visual (in addition to diffs, merges, etc.).

Hola, champs! For how long wll the development of new blender versions be as rapid as it is now? I might have gotten spoilt by 2.8s rapid release cycle.

* @SlugNugget * yes they count like 1,2,3,10, 1,2,3,10

Hi Dalai, hi Pablo,

Thank you for everything you do.

A friend of mine do 2D animation and would like to switch to Blenders Greace Pencil, but the Problem is he only have an iPad Pro. I tryed to compile Blender for iPadOS but i didn't succeed. Are there any plans to bring blender (especially für 2D animation) for iPadOS?

Stay healthy!!

1

* @Jonathan Ristow * If you have a mac you can just use your ipad as a screen and stylus using the sidecard thing.

Blender eevee has option for hashed shadows on transparent objects. I'm not sure how this hashing exactly works but would it be possible to render different shadow hash pattern on every sample? Everything would average out leaving soft transparent shadows

1
Souvik_Adak

Hi! First Of All, Love To The Whole Community Of Blender! My Question Is Eevee Is Kind Of Not So Stable In Terms Of Real Shadows! Its Sort Of Faking In! Could We Have Developments On Eevee In Blender 2.90?

1
ronsn

* @Souvik Adak * It is not sort of faking. It is faking :D

How does the converting between the C code and python work for the API?
(The python wrapper for the user interface)

Do you have to change the code in bpy.ops every time you add a new operator?

1
MickHanks

I want to flip the status bar to the top. is that in a python wrapper or deeper in C++?

Greetings from snowy northern Sweden!

How are F-curves handled and evaluated? In the graph editor / for animation?

derhardy

Thanks for all this great stuff that you are doing. <3 Has someone in the last year had some time to check what happened to the Fracture Modifier for 2.8? It seems lost but could be merged into 2.9 because it is not LTS. Thanks so much!

Hi,

Thanks Pablo for mentioning my proposal on Friday:

StylusUX - pressure sensitive & pen-optimized interface elements & tools

What should be the inbetween step after the proposal on Rightclickselect but before patching? Who decides/gives green lights for such UI/UX features? Where should I promote this, it would be quite useful for tablet users.

Btw here is the the Friday question:

What is the easiest and most effective way to multiply any parameter/tool value change by the pressure readout of the pen? I've found the slow_mouse in the wm_operators.c , but I'm not a coder, just a curious guy and it seems a sweet spot for this. </br> So if we could make an analogue version of the Precision Mode [Shift] for tablet users, it would be great. This is the main feature request of my proposal, you can read an explanation there.

Can you cross compiling from Linux to Windows with make currently? I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

How big the interest getting Blender runing on ARM64 as Rasberry 4 or Jetson Nano ?

When coding blender in C what functions do I call to manage memory, should I just use malloc/free/mmap or are there specific blender functions I should use?

Hi, Firstly thanks for creating such a wonderful piece of somewhere and making it available for everyone. I know that there has been an update to the view layers allowing you to create a new view layer with all the collections within that layer unticked.

My question is, will there ever be an option to simply duplicate a view layer and keeping the specific collections within the copied view layer like for like? Currently when you copy a view layer it doesn't take into consideration what collections are ticked and unticked. Hopefully this makes sense.

ps Great to see Dalai repping Brazil...

from a fellow Brazilian.

Hi, I asked this question in the video comments, but i'll add it here too in case it doesn't get read:

i want to know how to change the code so that all sub menus can be assigned a shortcut which in turn opens a pie menu showing the options in that sub menu. For example the object-convert to menu. I would like to avoid having to manually populate pie menu's with operators, and instead take advantage of blenders existing menu structure.

It would also be handy to know how to change the code to present users with a warning if they're trying to create a key combination which is already in use, and then give them to continue, in which case when the shortcut is used, a pie menu pops up with both operators that have that shortcut assisnged.

Hi. I'm missing a eyedropper for bones as there are for armatures, and last week i learned how to inspect the code, but i can't look at the code for the eyedropper (e.g. at the parent settings) with RMB. Is the eyedropper hardcoded?

Dantewei

Im teacher and love 2.8, but the computers on school are from the year 2000 Can you make a model and small render version for schools? Please XD not even 32 bits blender 2.7 works XD Is great for theaching

* @j.arcary * Tanks Pablo

hector.rojo.cg

Hola Pablo!, here a question, it is possible "Occlusion Culling" in Blender? if not, can be emulated? thanks to all!

Roman

Hello Pablo, Dalai. Is it possible to move a bone and an object at the same time during animation?

ronsn

* @Roman * lol xD

pablovazquez Author

* @Roman * Sorry I couldn't answer your question live.

Answer: Yes! Many ways:

  1. Parent the object to the bone
  2. Use a copy transform constraint
  3. Use drivers
Roman

* @Pablo Vazquez * Thank you, Pablo! I know about constraint: Child Of, Copy Location, Parent object, Armature modifier. This is not what need. I mean when you change the position of the bone with the object without constraint.

dupoxy

Hi Dalai, Hi Pablo! Can we have texture paint one pixel brush back please ? see developer.blender.org/D6209 and developer.blender.org/T71403 I can only manage to paint 2 or 3 or 4 pixelart: Image thanks for all your work

HUgoANtunes

* @dupoxy * You can do that in the shader menu and with any photo. Beetwen the paint or photo and the texture mapping put a voronoy with random at 0. then you can change the scale. Use a color ramp to put only 2 values of color
