Possible to set attributes for multiple objects?

I thought I was doing something wrong but now I'm not so sure. I do not think blender allows you to set properties to more than one object at a time. I just wanted to test this so I created 2 cubes in a collection, selected them both, then clicked the holdout button. I expected to change the property on both selected objects, but it only changes the active object. This goes for visibility as well although this can be set in a collection. The holdout does not work for a collection though.

I also thought that I could get around it by setting these attributes in a view layer. So I could theoretically at least have one view layer with holdout attributes and one without and switch between them easily.

However, making a change in a view layer changes all view layers. So no luck. Is there a way to select multiple objects and apply changes to all selected objects not just the active one? ie: anything in the visibility dropdown?

Holding down the Alt key when you make a change in a panel — for instance, Object Data Properties > Normals > Auto Smooth — applies it to all selected objects.
