External processing units on MacOS

I use a 2018 macbook pro and, generally, things work very well. However, Apple's lack of support for certain features can make things rather frustrating now and again.

Specifically, I would like to be able to plug in some gizmos to add some processing power to my setup. (To speed up renders, and maybe even the viewport or simulations or EEVEE.) Of course, due to something with the METAL API that I am only vaguely familliar with, I understand that Blender's MacOS version has a bit of trouble using GPUs.

My question is twoford.

-Are there plans to, at some point in the future, find a work-around to this issue to regain GPU support on Mac?

-What devices could I plug into my machine to meet this end? What external GPU's are there that might help? Is it possible to use an external CPU of some sort?

Thanks in advance.

Regarding your first question: There are efforts to support Metal for Cycles discussed in this thread: devtalk.blender.org/t/is-there-interest-in-supporting-a-metal-version-of-cycles-for-macos/4475/216

And another general request/discussion about Metal support: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/pPdbbc/

Afaik you can't currently use the full power of external GPUs on Mac in Blender due to the API bottleneck.
