2d animation is hard to use

I realized that 2d animation in blender is kind of hard even with an animation tablet. I got into animation by watching Alan Becker. I wanted an alternative to Adobe Animate. Can blender make an entire category that is not based on grease pencil that is easier to use and does not turn 3d when you accidentally click or drag ?

Not likely. There are other software options though, and some of them are really cool like Toon Boom Harmony.

Hello again, Blenderfolks!

I've made a complementary proposition, and Marked it as a Duplicate in regards to this one. You can see a screenshot there, regarding the 2D Viewport/Canvas features which could take place for Grease Pencil on Draw Mode only, by default and customizable on-demand.

I agree. There is room to make blender even more amazing by integrating something into the sequence editor which draws on UI paradigms like AfterEffects and Cavalry in particular. Check out the free edition of Cavalry to see what I am talking about. I just submitted an idea which seeks to implement something the pro version of Cavalry does (very expensive). And that is the export of LOTTIE files (from blender's compositor).

I come from 2D software and I must agree: I think what Grease Pencil's development has been achieving over time (and progressing) is fascinating! but it remains incredibly hard to adapt to it.

The instant RMB-Drag Viewport rotation which keeps ocurring (even from 2D Animation Workspace) is one terrible controlling choice for most 2D digital artwork making. What makes it so confusing, is that most 2D software (that I know) use it for panning the screen, no to 3D-rotate the screen. So, your Request is completely valid, from the perspective of who really know what it is like to have 2D digital experience from outside software. Actually, one solution to that peculiar problem, should be really simple: Blender should have a special Option for 2D Grease Pencil artwork, that might be Enabled by default whenever:

  1. Starting a new project of this kind: Topbar > File Menu > New > 2D Animation;
  2. On any file, when setting Workspace to: "2D Animation";
  3. Toggling (Enabling) the Option of "2D Viewport Lock", somewhere at the Header Region that appears while on... Draw Mode (an this Option only works on Draw Mode); note: I guess this Option not only should Lock the Viewport Rotation, but at the same time, switch that functionality [RMB-Drag] to a Viewport Panning; actually, this Option could open an entire 2D-related Viewport behaviors Popover Menu, for the user to prescribe exactly the behavior he/she wants for that current session on Draw Mode; and naturally those settings could be Saved as default Preferences? It would be nice though if the default behaviors Viewport controlling behaviors on Draw Mode were preset by comparison of some 2D software standard or something like that?

Fixing that, would make Grease Pencil experience at least 25% better by default, because of user-friendliness.

Then, another critical, conceptual issue, is the (file's) SIZE just a few strokes of GP makes the file to become! Blender needs to understand, that SKETCHING is supposed to be a light, as unburdened activity as possible! The artist shouldn't be in need to manually change the Mb-heaviness of the strokes for... any REAL Sketching Preset Brush! Apparently, there is no functional Preset Brush for Sketching because this fundamental question was missed from development conception of what is required for different Preset Brushes?

As an example: I've made 'just a few strokes' in GP for 2D Model Sheet of my 3D Character; my original file, which would have just about 30Mb, ends up having 150Mb, just because of the GP's default, which doesn't know what SKETCHING is about. This is not one time. This is always it has been like that.

Now, this used to scare me to death about using GP for 2D Animation in Blender one day in the future: If a few 2D Model Sheet strokes for Sketches are already heavy like that by default, then, how it would be even possible to make a couple of Frames in 2D Animation in Blender?!? This needs serious re-thinking; Sketching is quite a complex skill! In Sketch, is conjured the essence of the creation of the 2D artist; if a software cannot understand the essence of Sketching, how then can it expect to conjure the world and more creative people around itself? GP has incredibly improved it's utilities for good Sketching Brushes (I've been experimenting and comparing with 2D software); but certain fundamental aspects of it are still missing in the UI. With a little more effort, this can become a masterpiece of 2D-3D open source software (as if it wasn't already; but it can improve with a bit more care).

Solution: Make Mb-Size for Brush Presets a CLEAR Option to customize, before even the artwork has begun! and certainly, also: have at least 1 default, REAL Brush Tool Preset(s) FOR SKETCHING, i.e., with very low Mb-Size generation for its strokes.

This is all solvable by sharing presets for specific uses, and also asking the module owners of GP3 to add a lock to the view. Default settings for everything in Blender are never the right settings, they are just the base settings - yet a 'sketching' stroke and material setting preset would be great for all users to add as a Brush asset once the 4.3 asset system is released as stable. All great points, maybe you could split this into two proposals here on RCS for the devs to look into.

Thanks for the observations.

I think it will be worth making new, specific Requests then. Then I'll link to this topic if related.

Regarding viewport pan and rotation: you can set your mouse button to pan of you are in draw or GP edit mode (or any other fuctionality for that matter. I use this extensively). You can just copy the viewport navigation commands over to the GP section of the keymap, and set them up however you like it, and they will work that way for those modes only. They override the global settings.

Thanks for the tip; I was able to find out, I didn't even know there was in the Preferences > Keymap > Preferences > 3D View > Middle Mouse Action > something such as Orbit / Pan. Though I understand this is but a generic solution (not exactly what you meant). But I wasn't able to reproduce what you described. I still firmly believe Blender must keep improving, notably, its GP usability and 'user-friendliness' for 2D artists.
