Scene Material Override Improvements
Blender has very useful Override function to control the Scene. It’s extremely helpful at a lighting stage in the pipeline. You can just apply a material to the scene and start lighting it not distracted by materials and only focusing on value and shapes created with light.
Unfortunately it’s not easy to switch back and forth between Override on/off states. You have to remove and than again assign material to go back and forth. It’s too many clicks especially if you have a long list of materials.
Here is how it can be improved.
- Make it possible to toggle on/off the Override option. So once you've attached the override material its a matter of one click to go back and forth.
- Make sure the toggle can be added to favorites drop down menu so it's even easier to access it from any place if a user decided to add it to favorites.
Make it even more advanced.
I prefer to use mesh lights to light my scenes quite often. If I use my usual workflow and enable Override material it'll also override my mesh lights material. As a result mesh lights won't work.
- Make it possible to exclude mesh lights. It's probably best to use Collections to organaze mesh lights and then exclude them.
- It's best if individual objects/collections can be excluded included as well as the complete list.

I think there is a new AOV feature that might be similar to this in 2.82, but I'm not really sure
* @Zach Hixson * What AOV does is not the same as what is suggested here.
Hell yes. I've had this feature in Softimage and it is indeed super useful. Just hiding an override for development is a huge time saver.
Awesome mockup and good idea! I imagine this will probably need to wait for static overrides
* @Josephbburg * I don't know what static overrides are but I believe the first part of proposal can be implement rather easily. Just add the toggle to Override state so it can be set on/off.
It might be more difficult to add the rest of the changes unless there are more base functionality in Blender like you suggested. But it would definitely be very helpful for the lighting workflow.
* @Alexey Adamitsky * Static overrides is a way for Blender to "override" the data present in the .blend file (DNA) with data modified on the fly (so, making a different RNA from the DNA). Something like that!
It's exactly like dynamic overrides except in the current file.
