Add Keyframes in Graph Editor with Shift and Drag, same way as Reroutes in Node Editor

There is a nice intuitive way of adding Reroutes in Node Tree with Shift+Left Mouse Dragging over the link :

It would be super nice if similar workflow would be possible when Adding Keyframes in the Graph Editor. Shift or Ctrl + Left or Right Mouse drag over the channel would add Keyframe under the dragged "line", same way as Reroutes are added in the Node Editor.

Currently, when adding keyframes in Graph Editor, you need to move the current frame to the position you want to add the Keyframe. I personaly find that a bit annoying. With this “slash” way, you could add keyframes anywhere.

This is already a thing in Blender, and has been since as long as I can remember. CTRL Right Click does exactly this.

How? Just tested and CTRL Right click is Lasso select in Graph Editor.

First make sure you have a curve or keyframe selected, then ⎈ Ctrl Right 🖱️ somewhere in the graph, without dragging the Right 🖱️ . It will create a new keyframe off the active curve where you click. However, ⎈ Ctrl Right 🖱️ drag will indeed lead into a lasso tool.

Maybe a good compromise to keep the lasso tool accessible would be to have it show up only if we don't have anything selected already, but otherwise, let us ⎈ Ctrl Right 🖱️ drag to spawn and drag a new keyframe.

Hi, thanks for the explanation.

There is an odd behaviour with this: If you use select the keyfame with Lasso or Box ( Crlt + Left Drag or Shift+Left Drag) then the Ctrl+LM to add keyframe doesn't work.

You have to either "click" select a keyframe or lasso select the Graph only, without selecting any keyframes. Then the Ctrl+Right Click works.

I think this was the reason I didn't get it to work at first. I wonder if it is intended behaviour or a bug.

good point, that's the issue with area-selection tools: they don't define an active selection, which most operators require to function...
