Retopology mode for blender
The retopology tools in blender are complete but you need to click many buttons to start. I think blender should have a retopology mode. When you switch to retopology mode with an object selected it should:
- Create a single face/vert in edit mode on.
- Turn on face snapping.
- Add a mirror modifier with clipping on.
- Add shrinkwrap modifier with selected object as target.
- It is optional but we should be able to use smooth and relax brush in this mode.
All these tools sre natively present in blender. It is just needs some automatiom.

I'd rather have a retopology workspace, like the UV editor.
Retopoflow has a very integrated mode with really nice tools. But it really ruins the flow of blender and feels very intrusive to me. I don't mind the set up nearly as much as the lack of tools like contours, strips, strokes and patches in base blender. I think I'd be fine with retopology via just edit mode and snapping to be honest if we just got some improvements to 'Poly Build' tool and some new tools like 'Contours' and 'Patches' (Though part of the charm of those is that they are editable afterwards which requires some way to store the the info) Well either way it will be fairly big project I don't see it becoming priority that soon :/
LIke retopoflow? Would be nice

I think retopo is close to being automated away, so it'd be a waste of time to develop retopo mode or retopo workspace. We're better off improving remesh since it's already 60% as good as retopo, plus it works instantly.
In 5 years, do you really think people will be doing retopo by hand? No way, they'll just remesh. This feature, retopo mode, despite being a good idea for present day, will get outdated fast.
* @qwertquart * 5 years is an awfully long time to work without a decent retopo tool within blender
* @qwertquart * Based on the 5 year mark they really need to start training those AI networks now if they want to get anywhere close hand optimized meshes
* @3rton93 * The remesh tools are already almost there. The only problem is that they don't follow retopology rules for characters like symmetry, edge loops around eyes, and placing poles in the correct locations. AI is capable of recognizing facial features, so you could probably use that to tell the remesher where symmetry lines belong, where the extra edge loops around eyes go, etc.
The AI recognizes eyes and is programmed to know the procedure for placing edge loops in the correct place. Retopo has little to no creativity, aside from choosing whether you want high poly, low poly, or what type of topology you want. It's a repetitive process with strict rules, so that's something a computer would be well suited to do.
With today's technology, I really doubt it'd take longer than a few months for a skilled team to develop AI retopology tools that could do a decent character remesh, in seconds, that's on par with industry standard retopology. I'm just saying that in 5 years it'll probably be the industry standard to just do a one click retopo considering a study that found 47% of jobs are going to probably be automated away by 2034. Predicting the future is impossible, but it could be even more than 47% if AI gets better. Look at GPT-3 and how big of a leap that was. It's virtually indistinguishable from talking to humans.
+6. Have a material setup thats half transparant with the new mesh in blue face (normals) orientation color
Even Pablo said yesterday in the stream that Blender needs this. But until then, you can also upvote this older post here blender.community/c/rightclickselect/jfbbbc/
