Edge group for multiple bevel modifiers
On Blender you can add multiple bevel modifiers to your mesh. You can use different settings, Weight, angle or vertex group.
Vertex group allows you to assign a group to an edge and then to add multiple bevel modifiers.
This is ok for this kind of mesh, but that has a lot of limitations.
If you add some edges to your model, you will have this kind of result.
Because a vertex group is 1 or 0, so the result is always bad.
Also, if you change your mesh with boolean or else, you losse everything.

So, right now, it's not possible to use multiple bevel modifiers on a mesh we are working on :(
We could maybe add float to the vertex group or add an edge group to deal with that.
- We select edges, we add a group (group_1)
- We select other edges, we have a choice, Add to group 1 or Add a new group
On the bevel modifier we have the edge group instead of vertex group
Like that we could use multiple bevel modifiers on our mesh and have a better result.

Yes, allowing vertex groups as a way to specify edges to bevel is just an expedient hack because Blender doesn't have edge groups (yet). If edge groups are ever added, I would definitely put that as an option in the modifier. You know that you can also use edge weights to pick out the edges to bevel, but that would only work for one modifier out of a set of modifiers, as there is only one edge weight possible.
As per Blender.today #188: youtu.be/NCNUh2NHuIg This may perhaps be possible by using edge attributes set to float and implement this for the bevel modifier.
I'm starting to share this around, but I think I have solved it and actually it was your posting of this youtube video and timestamp that inspired it.
My post in the blender dev forums is here if interested:

I need to make one final tweak to the UI to allow the edge -> float attributes to be selected from a dropdown, but aside from that, I just need to do the pull request and see if I can get any traction among Blender devs.
You can use multiple bevel modifiers easily using the new unified attribute system blender.stackexchange.com/a/337481/142292
since 2016… Sad…
Yes, yes yes!! I would love to see this.
yes for a thousand times now for 2.8
Could edge groups be useful for other features where vertex groups or material faces are insufficient? It may be worth it to mention that. Otherwise, this suggestion (though very useful) is a pretty big addition to make to mesh data for just a single modifier.
actually edge and face groups would be useful. For example face groups would be useful if you want to set a particle surface but without interpolation between vertices. Sometimes you have to add geometry only to get a hard area selection. Edge groups could be useful also to not only set things like this, but also if you want to set bevel or something else on 2 close edges. Now, because there are only vertex groups, you have to add another edge between those 2 edges just to seperate vertices.
* @Karlis Stigis * This is one situation where I believe vertex group cannot do. Selecting specific edges. When trying to click the select button for the vertex group, the program will create a selection that would highlight the entire face instead of only selecting the boundary loop.
* @Jason van Gumster * IMO replacing bevel weights and crease with edge groups would be a good way to unify several different systems that do essentially the same thing, ie. assign a weight to an edge. There's a lot of talk about face maps too which could (most probably) just as easily be implemented with face groups with full weight capabilities.
I can also see edge groups useful in a couple of other modifiers:
PS These are actual cases I've encountered where edge groups would've been super useful.
Hey everyone! This is finally fixed and merged into Blender. It will be in the next release.
We will have the capability to do multiple bevels via different edge weights, or as some know it "edge groups".
Check out the demo out here:

Like many others I have been interested in this for non-destructive, multiple bevel workflows.
I think I've solved it making use of the fact that going forward in Blender 4.0+, bevel weights are stored in object attributes (of the type Edge/Float). So custom attribute groups can be created and then applied to multiple bevels.
Take a look here if interested: devtalk.blender.org/t/ui-function-to-get-attributes/32957/3
I'm hoping to garner some attention from Blender devs as the work is almost done, but just need to button up the UI before submitting the PR.
And not a single fuck was given.... 6y... Jeezzz!
Everyone who has tried to use blender for procedural hard surface modeling knows how much we need this feature. Wish any dev would at least acknowledge this suggestion, it's been 5 years.
I miss this functionality so much. It's awkward it's not in Blender yet. This should be standard functionality.
Woah it's almost 2021 and this is not even started...
EDGE GROUPS !
Yes you can use multiple Bevel modifiers using the new unified attribute system: blender.stackexchange.com/a/337481/142292
this post is 6 years old. Will this feature ever be added to the blender?

Why just bevel? Maybe this kind of thing will be easy in "everything nodes". because I think it is already there in sverchok.
Any possibilities this coming to 2.90?
Constantly bumping into this problem of needing to bevel specific edges to avoid problems with multiple bevel modifiers. Sucks that no one has deemed it important enought for years.
Topic is so old, and pictures wiped. * Cédric Lepiller * do you have backup? can you restore pictures?
Very helpful for specific selections. Vertex group is very useful but has limitations when it comes to selecting specific edges without highlighting the entire face.
