Edge Groups

blenderartists.org/t/addon-for-edge-group/684751 Here is a thread i started 3 years ago, and since then its been revisited 5 times at several months intervals. This goes to show that such a feature would be greatly appreciated.

The request is simple, the ability to add Edges as an "Edge Group", identical to "Vertex Group".

gyazo.com/1cb840f86931ab420179b9e4a3278ca8 Vertex groups dont always work, there has to be an extra line separating them in that case, which adds unnecessary complexity to the model.

You have several ways of storing "edge data";

  • Crease
  • Seams
  • Sharp (bool)
  • Bevel
  • Freestyle edge marks

But neither of these allow you to, for instance, use modifiers.

This idea was marked as a duplicate of Edge group for multiple bevel modifiers.

This would make the bevel modifier far more powerful especially when using multiple bevel levels. Bevel weight does not work in many cases and currently without extra loops there is no way to distinguish between groups of edges (with shared vertices) for different modifiers (bevel values).

This feature is really needed. Want it to use with bevel modifier.

But how about poly groups?)

As a former Cinema 4D users I must say I miss having the ability to make face and edge groups. Vertex groups just do not offer enough control alone.

* @dcb.creative * You can make Face Maps in the mesh data panel. But edge group is sure really missing !

Absolutely essential feature Always in my wish list +++

For everyone who needs this feature. Now it's possible with Geometry tools

Duplicate -- please use the search feature before proposing something.

Jorgen.anda96 Author

* @Josephbburg * you'll find a duplicate for nearly everything... If we're not allowed to start new conversations just because there was already a discussion around that topic 4 years ago then we'll get nowhere. A lot has changed since then, it might be good to get a fresh perspective rather than having to dig through a ton of 4 year old comments.

Fair point, if there was a similar thread made recently, but the fact that 4 years passed and nothing changed signals to me that it slipped under the radar.

* @Jorgen.anda96 * That's not the rules of the website.

JRRRRRR

* @Josephbburg * Could you perhaps link me to the 'rules of the website'?

jason

* @JRRRRRR * There's no link to rules anywhere (maybe I should make one), but since I started the site maybe what I say matters. The whole point of the site is to propose new features to Blender and vote upon them. If your idea is a duplicate of something that's already here, it's best to contribute to the discussion and vote upon that existing proposal.

* @Jorgen.anda96 * Here is the same idea. blender.community/c/rightclickselect/6hbbbc/ The search on this site doesn't give you good results. If you type "edge group " in the search section it gives you the random results.

So if people ask for this feature for 4 years - it's definitely needed. The same was with "weld modifier", people ask for it for 4 years. And now we have it. And it's changed a lot of how you modeling.

I think that it's better to have "edge groups" instead of "Crease", "Seams", "Sharp", "Bevel" and "Freestyle". The last five do what can be done "Edge Group". Groups will expend new technics and erase some limitations what "vertex groups" have.

* @Jason van Gumster * Yes perhaps that would be helpful. If you don't specify rules then just ponce around making them up as you go and backing it up with 'I started the site maybe what I say matters' you'll end up with a site that doesn't matter because no one uses it.

I'm curious to know what search term Joseph used. When searching for the term "edge groups" I looked through 60 search results (at which point it stops offering more unless I scroll up, then back down to make the more button appear) and not a single result was the post he gave as a duplicate.

In fact, when searching for the exact title of that proposal it still does not come up.

Notably, the proposal he links has both 'edge' and 'group' in the title, while the search results are returning proposals which have only one or the other in the title.

What you consider a reasonable amount of time spent searching for duplicates, and do you think this would be important to consider if you are going to start enforcing it as a site rule?

As someone who "started the site" perhaps what matters is what you do as opposed to what you say, and what you should do is clearly state there are rules regarding duplicates before people post them, and fix the search function.

I put started the site in quotes because while I was looking for rules and guidelines on posting I did find a brief about section, stating that the site was created by Pablo Vazquez and Francesco Siddi.
