Audio Mixdown Default Format and Filename Handling – Recommendation for Cross-Software Compatibility

When performing an audio mixdown in Blender, the default file format is set to FLAC. However, Adobe Premiere Pro, a leading video editing tool, does not natively support FLAC files. This creates workflow challenges for many professionals working across both platforms. Additionally, when clicking Render Audio, Blender pre-fills the filename field with the current .blend file name rather than leaving it blank for manual entry, which can cause confusion when changing formats or saving multiple versions.

Steps to Reproduce: Open Blender and create a new project. Go to Render > Render Audio. Observe that the default format is set to FLAC. The filename field is automatically pre-filled with the current .blend file name instead of being blank. Issues Identified: FLAC Compatibility Issue: FLAC is not natively supported by Premiere Pro, leading to extra conversion steps for professional workflows. Filename Handling: The filename field being pre-filled can be misleading. Users should be able to enter a custom name without worrying about extensions. Proposed Solutions: To enhance cross-software compatibility and improve user experience, I recommend either or both of the following changes:

Default to WAV: Change the default audio mixdown format from FLAC to WAV, as it is more widely supported in the industry, including Premiere Pro. Collaboration with Adobe: Consider reaching out directly to Adobe Premiere Pro’s support team with a formal feature request for FLAC support. This kind of collaboration could reduce compatibility gaps between two major creative tools and further Blender's role in the professional VFX space. Additionally:

Filename Handling Fix: Regardless of the chosen format, the filename field should default to blank and automatically populate the selected extension based on the chosen format (like WAV or FLAC). This behavior aligns with standard practices in Windows Explorer and other file management systems where the extension is handled automatically. Why This Matters: Blender and Adobe Premiere Pro are both highly respected tools in the creative industry, each contributing to professional workflows across the globe. Addressing minor compatibility issues like this can have a global impact on simplifying VFX pipelines and improving Blender’s perception as a production-ready tool. Small improvements like these can also showcase Blender’s dedication to evolving with the industry and collaborating with other leading tools.

While it's not a solution for everything you've mentioned here, you might find my proposal for a feature that lets you set your own default values at least makes your workflow smoother by enabling you to have WAV as the default. Would be interested to hear what you think!

I looked at reddit when I was looking up what Adobe does support and saw this statement "ogg plugin don't work in new premiere .. BUTtttt

just rename .flac to .wav and voila : ) can't beleve it"

I don't use Premiere Pro myself but it does sound about right that you can just rename the file type to fool the program.
