Better Visual Feedback (Edit Mode etc.)

Modelling in Blender always feels a bit strange and not responsive to me in terms of the user experience.

I wish there was a better visual feedback that shows what I will select before I klick on something. I made a little mockup, It can work the same way with vertex and edge select of course.

Especially for selections like loop select it could be very handy. (Also the selection system could be improved as a whole in terms of UI and UX but that's a different topic)

Of course this could be optional for example in the viewport overlay in case it disturbs anybody.

selection highlighting before clicking posted 2 years ago (use search).

Btw. it is interesting. How you expect to search for this later, by word "better" , "visual" or maybe "feedback" ? Why is it so hard to just name proposal by words of what this proposal actually talk about? You want to highlight selection - name it "highlight selection" or "pre highlight selection" something... Why name proposal as "Better Visual Feedback (Edit Mode etc.)"

Also, if u interested to know other than your personal experience, I can tell u why this will not work for me as well as many other people.

Such functionality seems cool if selection hardly framed in to some default settings and if modifier keys like Shift/Alt/Ctrl not used for anything else.

I use Ctrl+Mouse 5 for Snap Bisect, Ctrl + Mouse 4 for Knife, Ctrl+MW Up/Down for Select More/Less, Shift + MW Up/Down for Select Next/Previous, Ctrl + Alt / Ctrl + Shift / Alt + Shift + MW Up/Down for viewport orbit and roll (those by default on numpad keys), etc. etc... All those combination I use often in work will cause ALL THE TIME wrong highlighting "selection" when actually I do something else.

Same as it loose any sense if user like me use for Select Ring/Loop or so other than Something + Click keymaps. For example I use also alternative Alt+1 for loop and Alt+2 for Ring. It allows me to run operator without necessity to click on something by mouse cursor so no highlight needed.

Worse scenario if in attempts to bring those highlights alive devs will change current behavior too much as sacrifice, then I start to feel uncomfortable to select something... I don't like to give negative votes, but honestly - I don't feel any necessity of this highlighting selection and find it pretty useless feature for casuals.

Mr. developer, if you will start working on this feature - please make it "optional" feature and do not broke what work good while implementing such "improvement".

This is a must have. I don't think this is an anti feature.

Just like buttons in a UI have a hover feature, so should mesh components. It's way more complex than clicking a UI button and everything that can make it clearer is a plus. I have worked with this in other software...

Once you had it you cannot live without it, it is just so natural :)

It would be a "must have" if nobody could normally work without it. But not only it is not the case, it is also better to not have this in a lot of situations. I.E. overpopulated scenes are too messy and sensitive to have such extra overlays, performance hits make it unthinkable in lots of scenarios.

Though it could be an optional feature like it is in any other software that offers it, Ton has decided it would most likely never come back in Blender. So... Unless you find some big arguments to throw at him, this is not going to happen for a long time x)

Already asked, already rejected by the BF :

this is called "preselect highlight" and it has been requested many many times. Find one of those existing proposals and upvote them.

please! don`t waste time on this pointless feature.

I'd love that as well. Preselection Highlighting would be an excellent feature. I've already asked around. Read a thread or two in DevTalk, but nothing so far. This addon PolyQuilt has a great highlighting feature, which makes me think that it is not so hard to implement as well. If someone can make this as an addon, I will definitely buy it. Cheers for the proposal!

An option for pre-highlight overlays would be an incredible feature. I have missed this from all other 3D software so much, and indeed it boosts speed a lot.

Already asked many and many times. While I doubt the devs will change their minds on having pre-selection highlight as a whole, I do agree that things like Loop selection NEED a pre-selection, half of the time I use it I have to click a bunch of times before I select the desired loop. Maybe changing the title and making this request more specific asking to make it work with specific selection modes might help.

While I enjoyed preselection highlighting in another app for many years, I honestly haven't missed it in Blender at all. I won't downvote but I'm not compelled to upvote either.
