Switch Node Design
I think a switch node should be added which is just passing through the selected input. This should be a general node for all types of node trees.
It could either change the output socket type to the active input sockets data type or have a dropdown that allows you to select the data type you want the node to use.
Some different versions of the design:

Great one but regarding the design I would prefer round checkboxes (radio buttons) aligned to the input slots for clarity and simplity and in case you need 20 inputs.
* @Ge Ro * but then u wouldnt be able to input one value to choose the output
* @Simon Sommer * why not? the control value could still have a slot and the checkboxes to update according to the input value or show them disabled and indicate the value with a dynamic label.
* @Ge Ro * yeah maybe we should just add a drop down with the options slider and checkbox. I know that the current design has no real slider but i think it would make sence.
* @Simon Sommer *
one of these would be best
Yes im updating the ui designs to use a int slider
does anyone think that GN can compete with houdini
Basically a boolean math nodes with more entries. Let's make it accept as many entries & data types we want too
* @-L0Lock- * yeah thats exactly what its ment to do :)
Voting for this? Geometry and compositing already have a switch node, but not shading.
There are basically two different ideas here. The switch node itself is fantastic, and seems like the basic functionality wouldn't be too hard to make.
The other idea is a UI problem: how to communicate to the player that the should select whole numbers / integers, and/or how to make an input that only accepts whole numbers and somehow rounds other inputs into whole numbers.
The switch node idea works, the integer selector idea needs more work.
* @Janne Joensuu * I think a new slider design like this would make sence:
* @Simon Sommer * now imagine that with a 32bits map plugged as factor ♥
you might want to take a look at this old proposal
Great idea!! A dropdown would also be great. I'm planning to make assets containing 20+ presets. An easy switch as you suggest would save me so much work. A dropdown for huge option list would also be great.
