Basic level

  • Update in real-time.
  • A bezier curve.
  • Add new keys like adding new bezier points.
  • The endpoints of the curve should only have one handle to prevent user confusion.
  • Take advantage of blender curve normals.
  • Set frame ranges from selected keys.
  • Available in the timelines menus, not just properties.
  • Right-click over Bezier Handle type to points.

Advanced level

  • Grease Pencil draw over the top of a motion path.
  • Sculpt a motion path.
  • Convert motion path to curve.
  • Convert motion path to linked curve.
  • Time Control sliders (OpenToonz deals with well)
  • 2D screen space motion paths (Just as important as 3D Motion Paths)

Properties

  • Switch on/off frame numbers.
  • Switch on/off Keyframe numbers.
  • Switch on/off Keyframe tag colors.
  • Switch on/off Time Ticks.
  • Change the Scale of: - Handles - Bezier width - Frame numbers - Keyframe numbers
  • Custom colors of - Spline (Solid and gradient). - Key numbers - Frame numbers - Time Ticks - Start & end Points + handles - Handles

Examples from other software so we can stand on the shoulders of giants.

I think there is confusion between what the devs believe people want from the motion path as most usually request or make reports with having it being editable in the viewport... That's a killer feature, yes.

BUT, the current motion path is barely usable since it doesn't reflect changes made from the graph editor etc. All it absolutely needs, and it needs it now, is to be auto-updating. Beyond that, the next step is to be a toggle feature and automatically create motion paths for current selection.
