Cycles render engine really needs a separate IPR or Frame Buffer
Let me just clear this out in the first line : I am not asking to remove the current Viewport rendering. I am just asking to add an IPR window with some useful features.
Blender's viewport rendering is great but it also causes a lot problems in the rendering workflow. Although with the Image Editor Panel some people have found a workaround to tackle a few of the problems mentioned below but those are very finicky and not an actual way to do these stuffs.
Why a separate IPR window is great :
IPR or Interactive Photorealistic Rendering is the most widely used workflow for rendering. A separate IPR may help with many things which the current method of doing rendering doesn't allow. Such as :
-
You can't set a resolution to interact with your render. If you want to keep a low resolution and less render time you have to use the camera view to zoom out and lower the resolution but if you are too far zoomed out (Because your scene is very heavy) you can not see the whole image clearly. This is where an IPR comes in handy. You can set your desired rendering resolution and zoom in out anywhere in the image because it is only a 2D panel. It let's you see details without increasing the resolution and lowering render time.
-
When we want to make Render Region other stuffs in the rendered image goes black and olny the render region is visible. For some people they might think this is good because it let's you focus on the specific region. But in the long run it causes a lot of problems. That's why almost all the render engines don't black out the outer part of the render region. Instead it keeps the rendered image visible and only renders the specific region. There can also be a passepartout to adjust how much of the Alpha you want.
-
The Sidebar Panel (or the N panel) may have some useful features as well like small color grading, Render Layer management and a huge feature which might take Blender to the next level and that is LIGHT MIX .
-
The bottom region of the IPR can be used to see the Preview of the render slots because remebering which slot has which image is very hard. That's why a preview of a render slot is very important.
-
Then comes the Mouse Hovering feature. Suppose you want to render a part of the image qucikly than other areas and you want a falloff of rendering tiles to be in the same area where your mouse is. So when you hover in that area it renders quickly compared to other areas.
-
And last of all BUTTONS . IPR window can have a lot of useful and easy to use buttons. Like Pause, Play, Stop and Refresh button. A separate dropdown of all the AOVs. Button for Bucket Rendering and Progressive rendering. Button for selecting a focus object . A Zoom Button. A Frame All Button. A Render Resolution Button. And the most useful button of all maybe the COMPARE SLOTS botton. This can make your workflow faster and can give a calm mind.
Giving an IPR window may not be that hard because blender already has a lot of fucntions built in to the Image Editor panel. Just adding some more functionality to it and making the render results separate will give an IPR like feel.

While I completely understand your point and I also find all these features really helpful, having the render preview directly in the viewport is one of the strength of Blender. This is something I particularly dont like in other apps.
Passing through another windows/editor for this means you have to modify your interface each time you want to view any shaded things. In the case where that editor wouldnt be docked, you would need that window to stay on top which is curently not possible with the default Blender and this is (to me) another great thing about it compared too other apps (could be a toggleable option though).
I would rather prefer to stay with the current system but improved, by adding all these features directly in the viewport (header, N panel and why not T panel).
And I know this will not solve the whole problem here but you actually can set a different render preview resolution by changing the pixel size under "Render Properties > Performance > Viewport"
* @Shimoon * I am not saying to remove the current viewport render. I am saying to add an extra IPR window. I said it in the first sentence that "viewport rendering" is great. And the softwares which have IPR windows also have viewport rendering too. Like Maya, Houdini, Cinema 4D.
yes as we have most of the mentioned features in 3d view .. I guess it will be not so tough task for developers to add a seperate window for that.. would be useful +1 from me
I would also add a gamma and exposure option to the IPR window.
I for one one, cannot stand any overlays or distraction on the viewport render preview. Sure these can be mostly turned off, but not completely without also disabling the vital statistics that show the sample count during preview. Also, I cannot wait for a live compositor preview. All of these considerations may call for a new area type specialized for IPR, optimized for low latency user interruption, lower resolution, mouse priority sampling, vital render statistics, etc, etc.

Agreed, but don't call it IPR. So much 3d work is toon or abstract or stylized and motion graphics, "interactive photorealistic" doesn't fit in my opinion. Plus rendering in the viewport is where the real "interactive" rendering happens.
I think what you're asking is a clone of 3dsMax ipr window. I also think that you might not use the interactive window at its full potential.
Having a window on top of the interface is also a thing that blender avoids from its origins, even more: it is its very first ui paradigm.
* @ Lsscpp * Of course it is not a clone of 3ds max. IPR isn't exclusive to 3ds max. Doing one thing differently doesn't mean it will be superior than others. That's why we saw a major UI change in 2.8 version. Nothing stays forever. Things need to change. That's why Blender didn't stay in the early UI design. Also i am not asking to remove viewport rendering. I am just asking to give an additional IPR window. That's all.
All the softwares which have IPR also have a viewport rendering. Doing something do like other major softwares doen't make it a clone.
* @ Lsscpp * The vast majority of new blender users prefer the current default of the render opening in the popup window instead of the UI switching to an image editor panel or to the rendering workspace.
* @thinsoldier * That is "likely". We can't say it for sure though, unless a trustable poll exists somewhere... ?
* @ Lsscpp * Considering the massive increase in users over the last 2 years NOT complaining in forums/social media bout being confused as hell the first time they clicked "render image", I'm confident I'm right about this.
