New Render Window | Discussed on Blender Daily

Hello everyone!

Here is a proposition for a new dedicated render window in Blender. It was first discussed in a previous video, and then based on community feedback, updated to this:

The proposition has 2 steps.

  1. Start with the image editor, with the render result selected, as a familiar base. Remove all of the not working/irrelevant to rendering, functions and buttons. Reorganize the UI, to have it streamlined for rendering.
  2. Add simple but very useful features, demonstrated in the video.

Thank you very much to everyone who participated in the discussion and contributed to bringing this feature request together.

We can still build upon this submission, your feedback is very welcome, share your thoughts in the comments!

I would vote for this whole idea. I could imagine that a lot of the features will improve the workflow speed. Awesome!

Sounds like a lot of programming work, but imagine how great it would be to have this with the Blender 3.0 release

Hope it gets into blender.

very usefull!

Great, I miss this functions in Blender. He, he, this will be better than similar stuff in other software.

Thats an amazing set of ideas!

Great work! Thanks a lot :-) There a so many things present in the render window that don't make any sense there and so much little helpful things missing... Hope this proposition can be incorporated very soon... ++

Hope this comes it sounds awesome

Yes please! The render region thing is so needed.

This is perfect .. hope the devs have a look at this.

This is awesome. Please, we need this

I vote for it! Your ideas are very useful. I hope they will make their way into Blender. (Allthough to compare two render slots you can actually press [J], to cycle through the slots jet)

* @Eno Kahl * of course you are right, we can cycle with "j" or jump to a specific slot with the numbers above the keyboard. When using a reference image, I think it can be useful to have them side by side. thank you for your support!

As already mentionned in your youtube channel, 100% agreed with an additionnal feature to split render and compare two slots directly as Corona render's buffer

That’s such a good thing to add to blender. Missing something like that from my old Maya Arnold days! Keep up the work.

* @philip.wilhelm1 * Cinema 4D have some of this functions, also Arnold... I guess that some other software have such things. Some stuff see first time, like reference image which can be directly compared to render.

Another very useful framebuffer feature - Render tiles appearing at the cursor position. Imagine that you can specify which place you want to quickly check. You don't waste time until the entire frame is rendered to find out that something is wrong in the corner of the frame.

* @pawel.palenica * Hello Pawel that looks super useful! I'm all for it! Do you think it would be a lot of work for the developers to add this new feature? Maybe for this first request we should focus on UI optimization which would already greatly improve our workflow when rendering. Then if it gets implemented, ask to add this feature?

I agree with you that what has been proposed will be a great improvement. I don't know much about programming, so unfortunately I don't know if what I'm talking about is difficult to do.

I know this feature from vray's framebuffer in 3ds max and it is a very useful feature. Here on rightclickselect, this feature has been talked about before and has gotten quite a lot of attention, so there definitely is a need from the community for it. Here is the link to this request:

blender.community/c/rightclickselect/Ypfbbc/

Do what you think, I just wanted to point out the request. Best regards :)

* @pawel.palenica * Great improvment as with Vray

thinsoldier

* @Karim Joseph * a possible "simplest thing that works" early solution could be to add a "starting point" field under render performance settings area where you can add an x and y position for the image to start rendering from.

It's a great update ! Thanks man

yes! totally agree with this! Please

I can only agree with the suggestions shown in the video. I hope that the render window gets enhanced someday.

There's another feature (regarding rendering) that I would like to see in Blender: literally, what the "Animated Render Border" add-on provides:

This add-on speeds up previewing renders by tracking and only rendering objects that move. It saves rendering time by not rendering parts of the image that don't change.

I am not sure to be really clear but the description (and video) of the add-on says it all: blenderartists.org/t/animated-render-border/646511

I tend to think that features from this add-on should be part of Blender by default.

Is there any update on this proposal?

karimjoseph Author

* @shubhampatilart * hello not yet, as of now we have not heard anything from the Blender team. But this can take some time, there are a lot of great propositions on here!

I would love to see these changes

very nice... also in the right sidebar you can put some check buttons and sliders to add some compositor features that will be added automatically to the compositor like bloom, flare effects, light / contrast values

alex_eagle

... and AOV drop down menu also

Great! I thought about dropping a similar proposal here. But that's even better!

I agree to all features you have explained. It would be useful:

  • add tone mapping tool and lightmix like Corona Render or VRay
  • compare button put a slider direcly over the image, on the same render window. The slider can switced horizontaly / verically with a dedicated button, this option lets more easly to compare image A and B, to change render slot A or B you can split compare button and put the corrisponding letter to the icons of the buttons. (as it is in Corona or VRay )

Very thoughtful.

Nice. In addition, I feel a small icon to toggle 'sample color' would be nice.

I miss easy-in-your-face accessibility to this function from other renderers like Arnold or Maxwell. Plus, when Blender displays it, it's a long line of unintuitive values that are hard to relate to more common RGB values found in textures like 128/128/128. I like to use this function to calibrate lights and shaders, so it makes much more sense if I can check the rendered output to "eyedropper RGB values". I find it much more intuitive to think of "white wall reflectance" as maybe RGB 205, instead of the decimal readout. But maybe that's just me and what I'm used to?

Also, I'm working with trackpads and I always need to switch the 'press right mouse button' to 'click right mouse button' for it to be convenient. A button toggle would help with this too.

alex_eagle

I would add an 'A/B comparison' feature.

This is such a great idea, and includes so many solid, basic features missing from Blender. Have you considered posting this as a fresh proposition? It's disappointing to see it buried under 4 years of more recent posts.

romboutv

PS, some of these features can quite easily be added with some python. But i hope they implement just for the sake of it

romboutv

I would like to suggest to add an overlay mode. So you have a slider which show current and prior image. We see this a lot on online comparission. You can make this with nodes. But my old engine had this feature build in, its super nice

sam4

This should include a live IPR! Interactive Preview Render should reflect settings for f12 render NOT viewport.

madeira3d

I would like to see render slots automatic and get out of the user way. I miss a lot of other features from a moder IPR.

Glen-in-Japan

Love the ideas here. Please also add a start render button to the render window so I don't have to go to the render menu to render or press F12 all the time.
