color random option to preserve same color thru instances

Hi all.

I think can be very useful to have an option to keep the same color between instances when visualize the color/ random .

In this way it would be extremely clear what objects are sharing the same data without manually checking.

Maybe having that option popping up only when Random is selected.

thank you

Random uses object names as seed, so .001, .002, etc produce different colors.

Instances have different object names but same mesh data name . So it's technically possible, just needs to be a switch that changes source for color seeds.

Those are called linked duplicates. There are more ways how you want to show random colors in the viewport. In that case we should add a selection field as they are mutual exclusive. A consideration I am not clear on yet if it makes more sense to be an overlay. As overlay it could also work for grease pencil strokes and in any shading mode.

Sorry, you are right, I got too focused on "sharing same data" wording, collection instances mechanism is different from objects sharing data 😅

There is older proposal with mockup that shows collections \ objects \ sub-objects \ object ids overlay selector setting as another row: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/Hzcbbc/
