Grease Pencil - Bake as image sequence modifier
This could be used to create stuff that is then applied as textures (and animated texture) on 3D model.
Quick example of an application:
Someone that would like to create LEGO type characters and would like to have face decals animated with expression and character talking.
This would need to be done on 2 features, the most important one is to be able to bake the grease pencil object as a texture for the current frame.
That texture (at current frame) could be stored in memory when created by the modifier, and the user could apply it on the character.
Here is a quick mockup of the modifier interface (might also need a frame offset to tell where the animation start in the grease pencil object):
As a second step I also proposed to use projected decals (from the image to plane addon) Here is the link to the other proposal:

This could be optional, as once you have the texture, you could set it on the character UV's afterward.
I had the idea while looking at "The settlers" project. They were experimenting on doing almost the same thing... But the feature did not exist so they had to resort to more complicated stuff.
The grease pencil object is mature enough for animating a full face with talking and doing toons expressions, it just need this new feature to be used in theses situations.
Hope this idea could be picked as I can't code this myself but might open new doors for animations studios...

Thanks for the explanation! I have been searching for ways to do this and only came up with the same work around as "The settlers" project. Would love to see more support one this feature.
This would make it very easy to create a simple animation with a grease pencil rig instead of working with the vertices of a 3D mesh.
that would a great way to actually texture the model with nice brushes
