Per-Clip Compositing Node System in the Video Sequence Editor!

Future Blender?? Chnages.png In software like DaVinci Resolve, it’s possible to take any clip from the timeline, enter the Fusion tab, and apply changes—such as flipping, color correction, or custom effects—specifically to that selected clip, without affecting the rest of the sequence. I was wondering if Blender could adopt a similar concept in the Video Sequence Editor (VSE).

Currently, Blender's VSE offers basic modifiers like Brightness/Contrast, Color Balance, and Curves, but they are limited of what they offer. If you want to do something more advanced—like flip, color correct, mask, or composite per clip—it requires jumping into the Compositor which changes the whole scene, managing multiple scenes, or duplicating .blend files. That can quickly become inefficient and hard to manage.

💡 Feature Idea:

What if each strip in the VSE had access to a "Compositing Node Modifier"—similar to how 3D objects can use Geometry Nodes as a modifier? This could open the door to powerful, per-clip adjustments without needing to reroute everything through the main compositing tree.

It doesn’t have to be complex from the start. It could begin with a simple constraint—like a cap of 5 to 10 nodes per strip—to maintain performance and simplicity. Since the Compositor is now GPU-accelerated, performance should already be significantly better than it used to be.

And here’s another exciting idea: if these per-clip compositors could be saved to the Asset Browser, users could easily build a library of custom effects—like noise, glow, filters, or stylized looks—and simply drag and drop them onto any strip in the VSE. This would be a major step forward in bridging the Compositor with real-world editing workflows, while giving even more utility to Blender’s Asset Browser.

🧪 Why this matters:

  • Cleaner workflow for per-clip adjustments

  • No need for multiple scenes or nested .blend files

  • Leverages Blender’s already-powerful Compositor

  • Encourages greater use of the Asset Browser

  • Makes it easier to re-use and share custom visual effects

I'm not saying this needs to happen immediately, but I think it’s an idea worth exploring. Would this type of workflow be useful to you? I’d love to hear the community’s thoughts on this—especially from anyone doing video editing or motion graphics in Blender. Future Blender??.png
