Shapekey Brush.
I want to propose a brush for sculpting mode that allows you to paint from one Shapekey to an other.
It's a super simple yet very powerful idea:
When you select the shapekey brush you'd get a dropdown list to select the shapekey you'll use as a brush in the tools panel and top bar, while as usual in the shapekey panel you can select the shapekey you're editing.
So for instance you can now select the "base" shapekey as your brush when you're making your face shapekeys and that would allow you to easily blend the shapekey with the original shape.
As a note this brush would only be available for non dyntopo / multires sculpting.

This sounds great. We can keep the whole process in one package. For shapekeys a brush would be geared towards not altering the vert count of the mesh you're working on? So I guess the sculpting has to be things that involve mostly moving? Unless we can get to where that doesn't matter any more. I'm a little green on this part of the pipeline.
* @FrankS * yeah i think it would only work for non multires / dyntopo
Yes yes YES
Really like the idea. Would act like the Morph Target brush which is available on ZBrush.
I just found out that the new Slide Relax brush reverts back to the basis shapekey if you are painting on another shapekey. This was not intended and has already been fixed in 2.83 alpha (so only 2.82 has this behavior). It does the effect you mentioned except it also slides the vertices of course. However, if you keep the strength low, the sliding is very mild.
* @Caetano Veyssières * I started a discussion on devtalk: devtalk.blender.org/t/unintentional-shapekey-brush/12161
* @Caetano Veyssières * In any case there is a way to get it done perfectly and with complete control over which shapekey you want to revert to. Here's how it can be done (we'll call the shapekey you are currently editing "shapekey 1"):
Disable the shapekey you want to revert to. Well' call it "shapekey 0" (if it's the Basis, no need to disable it)
Add a new shapekey from mix. We'll call it "shapekey 2"
Re-enable shapekey 0
Set both the Range Min and Value to -1
Assign it a vertex group
Paint weights in that group to define where shapekey 1 should revert to shapekey 0
Disable shapekey 0
Add a new shapekey from mix again. We'll call it "shapekey 3".
Re-enable shapekey 0
Delete both shapekey 2, shapekey 1 (shapekey 3 replaces 1) and the vertex group
And voilà! Not nearly as straightforward as a dedicated sculpt tool but gets the job done in the mean time.
Oh yes, someone please do this.
