Mesh shape as (special) modifier
So when you add an object shift-a you get the same menu but it has new option. Add as modifier. This creates a new modifier called mesh shape. Now you can non-destructively change the shape with other modifiers while still have access to the shape parameters. Great for boolean objects for example. Naturally editing the mesh is problematic for this modifier so the modifier might need applying before editing can be done. This would be also great for addons which add more complex shapes. Like bolts and screws. Now you can quickly change the length of the bolt without having to redo anything.
Because the modifier is essentially the object I have removed the movement arrows and other buttons. This modifier would be fixed to the top of the modifier stack.
I thought this had been already suggested but I could not find anything. Anyways one of the annoyances in blender is that the mesh shape menu (F9, that you get when you add a new shape) disappears as soon as you do anything with the mesh. For some things this is incredibly annoying because even if your object is totally untouched the F9 goes away and only way to add say 2 more verts on a cylinder is to delete the cylinder and add a new one with minor change.
(Can't delete the attached file below, I get 404 error)

There is a parametric geometry addon called Wmesh which can do something like this.
