Wireframe shader to show actual topology

This idea has been mentioned before, but it needs a bump and perhaps simpler communication.

While showing tris is useful, it's far less useful than showing where the actual edgeflow is.

Ideally, there should be a checkbox to show original topology, and another to show in tris.

I know cycles renders from tris, and I'm not sure the fix for this. but we need to be able to show our edges, where we've put them and it should really be done with a shader that doesn't modify or alter our mesh.

This is big thing for modelers to show their work in their portfolios and thus would make blender more competitive in the professional setting.

I can offer design, and experience support but I can't code.

For those in need of a solution for now. This is the best approach I've found. Path of least resistance but not great. youtube.com/watch

You can do this with Psoft Pencil+, but certainly that's not a free built-in solution. Nonetheless, if you are a studio and need to do this regularly and have a budget - consider it.

Agreed, this actually would be really useful.

Currently i do one of these workarounds depending on the use case:

  • enable wireframe in viewport and render viewport
  • use wireframe modifier (replace original on/off depending on use case)
  • custom cycles wireframe shader, which detects edges based on a set threshold of angle and colors them differently than the rest of the object

have you seen the 4th way with the freehold edges? It's interesting how many ways there are to do this EXCEPT the standard shader way. youtube.com/watch

ah, yes, freestyle. Forgot about that one as it was kinda buggy a few years back when i attempted that the fist time and even now there are quite a lot of limitations, especially on larger models or scenes: docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/render/freestyle/introduction.html . Still, great results if blender isn't crashing with freestyle enabled.
