Separate reference images from overlay's "extras"

In "Viewport Overlays" reference images are now in "Extras"-category, they could be separate if need to hide/show them.

When doing 2D animation I'd like to hide example empties etc. objects "lines" from viewport which are not need in viewport. But like to keep reference images, example for characters.

I agree it would be nice if you could hide other empties and show images, but the problem is that reference images are empties that are displayed as images instead of axes. So this option would have to show one type of empty and hide others... Not saying it's impossible or shouldn't be done, it's just a bit weird.

I quoted this submision in Reference Image Empty as specific category for visibility panel .

Which of both do you think will be the better approach for displaing images as empties?

In the meantime you can do a custom py workarround:

import bpy
is_on = 0
for ob in bpy.data.objects:
    if ob.type == 'EMPTY':
        if ob.hide_viewport == True:
            is_on = 1
            break
for ob in bpy.data.objects:
    if ob.type == 'EMPTY':
        if is_on == 1:
            ob.hide_viewport = False
        else:
            ob.hide_viewport = True
