Cycles OpenVDB Integration + Volume Meshing

OpenVDB has become a staple volumetric tool in many of the industry's most powerful software, and has largely been distributed as Open Source (hence the name).

Blender has yet to integrate any type of support for this data type, beyond as a caching data structure for Smoke sim.

In Cycles, it would be awesome to have a socket to plug in an OpenVDB volume cache directly as a 3D texture, much like the existing 2D texture node.

In terms of further Blender core integration, I still think it would be an amazing leap for Blender NPR (among other things) if there was a way to convert a smoke simulation into a mesh. For example, create a mesh encapsulating every cell above [density threshold]. Vertex velocity would be the velocity of the sampled cell. It would also be a feature that I have yet to find anywhere else.

Visually, volume meshing would look like the mesh preview shown here: youtu.be/DHKYJCE6mnY

I want openVDB in Blender, too! blender.community/c/rightclickselect/jjcbbc/

I think someone is trying to introduce OpenVDB to blender for sculpting purposes. I'm not sure if this is the kind of thing we can expect in the future?

It seems to be a branch of blender, I hope we get to see these features merged in the future!
