Undo Categorization
Similar programs have a separate undo stack for moving the user point of view in the viewport. Blender would benefit from having the same thing as well as another undo stack just for the 3d cursor location.
I propose having 3 sub-categories of Undo.
-
Global Undo
(current undo list but without listing changes to viewport viewing angle or 3d cursor position or text editor) -
Viewport Navigation
(listing all changes to viewports and scene camera caused by navigating, not moving camera objects with grab or move tool widget) -
3D Cursor
(listing all changes to 3D cursor position)
Add operators that can be bound to keyboard shortcuts for:
- going back and forth through the 3d cursor undo stack
-
going back and forth through the viewport navigation undo stack
- When used as a keyboard shortcut it only undoes the navigation of the viewport that the mouse is currently over. So, behind the scenes, viewport navigation is actually tracked on a per-viewport basis, but this does not need to be represented in the Undo menu because 99.98% of the time the user will want to use the keyboard shortcut.
Repeat History should be a menu just like the current Undo History and as long as the Undo History menu has contents, the Repeat History menu should have the same contents. Not being able to redo after an undo or after a deselection is painful.
Text Editor undo history should be only within the menu of the text editor.
Undo/Redo Editor
Add an editor that lists all undo history with the ability to filter by where the event came from (text editor, 3d object, viewport navigation, 3d cursor move, etc).
Event without the filtering it would just be nicer to have the undo stack permanently viewing anywhere we want in the UI instead of having to use the Undo menu.
FYI - Fly/Walk navigation can by activated with
shift + ~
if your keyboard has the
~
key next to the number 1/ESC keys. If you are currently looking through the scene camera and use
shift + ~
you can navigate the camera without having to go into the sidebar to activate
lock camera to view
.
If you navigate the scene camera in this way you can only undo ONE camera move SOMETIMES.
If you use lock camera to view you CANNOT undo camera moves.

navigation history (Shift+Z/Y) is something I still miss from 3ds max
