Geometry nodes : Node to separate objects

Blender Ideia.png

My idea is to separate parts of the same object with Vertex Group

This would make it possible to create procedural models that have poly-by-poly modeled parts

Separating parts of an object's mesh by vertex groups will make geometry nodes a tool with infinite possibilities.

This would work well with my suggestion for 'Lists' of values ( blender.community/c/rightclickselect/1Wxm/ ). The separate geometry node could have a 'List' output of geometry values. I've updated my proposal to show how it could work.

I like the suggestion. Have some questions:

  • How output parts should be sorted to preserve constant order under any circumstances?
  • What if number of results changes?
  • Could it be implemented as enumerator - a separate output attribute counting from 0 to N that you can feed into Switch node?
  • Could it be implemented as 'Split mesh and output only the part with index K'?

This suggestion would make it possible to have the same or even more options than using only vertex groups

It is common to use vertex groups in non-destructive modeling

Bringing this possibility to Geometry Nodes, we could create procedural transformations on single objects, without the need to parent multiple objects.

About your questions, this node would be after the original geometry and would be like a filter for the later nodes. I think it shouldn't be seen as a split but rather as currently used, a filter that can be used to apply a certain change (shape keys, modifiers, etc.)

As a workaround you could use two inverted "Delete Geometry" nodes: Screenshot_2021-07-07_17-41-13.png
