Bake to Vertex Colors
EDIT: Now implemented in 2.92, there are some baking settings missing compared to 2.79, but it is not directly related to baking to vertex colors. Big thanks to developers!
Baking to vertex colors is a very important feature used especially in the game industry, which allows to save a lot of resources by baking the color information to the geometry (like Ambient Occlusion shading on the screenshot). In case of an older games, this can even substitute missing in-game lighting.
While this feature is available in Blender 2.7x (a tickbox Bake to Vertex Color when using Blender Render Engine), it is missing completely in 2.8x. The available addons trying to substitute the functionality are either not usable in all scenarios, or they are limited and slow.
I would hugely appreciate if this is re-implemented, so we don't need to go back to 2.79 just because of the baking to vertex colors.
Thanks!

Agree, vertex colours is really need for me too
Until there is a proper implementation for baking to vertex colors, you can use a free Addon that I have coded

* @Daniel Bystedt * Thank you, but I am afraid this kind of implementation is not the replacement of 2.79 baking. I make a rally tracks and bake AO to thousands of vegetation models along the track at once (grass, bushes, trees - millions of triangles), from what I have seen it seems the addon first need to UV map all the geometry to create a lightmap texture which is then baked to vertex colors. I am not sure this will work for my scenario with so many geometry, the resulted lightmap would be crazy large.
The loss of this feature in Cycles/2.8x has been a huge pain, as it forces me back to 2.79 just to use it. It'd be a godsend to see vertex color baking re-implemented.
Yes please, we need that feature back!
Having the ability to bake to vertex colors is incredibly useful. At the very least, reaching feature-parity with 2.7x should be an important priority.
Would be really helpful, if Bake to Vertex Color would get some attention. :)
Please Blender is better than Maya, and Maya has it this in its new vertion, come on guys Blender is much powerfull, this tool is so need it for videogames to have a better performance avoiding maps (memory), please please add again this Option.
THis reques is asked from many months ago, please help us!
I may be a little late to the party but I think I found a simple solution to this problem.
* @arnewestedt * Good to know
YES ! i vote for this feature dear CYCLES team! It saves not only time for uv'ing and baking lightmaps, but also it saves lots of memory on smartphones. Thanks for everyone here.
bake to vertex color is inneed.
I'm also in need of this feature, hope it gets added soon!
is this what you are looking for? youtu.be/j9LsMosCnZE
* @alphaxde * No, Dirty Vertex Colors is just quick (but also very handy) feature that adds darkening into crevices. But if you need to bake AO shadows casted by trees onto the terrain, you need regular raytraced Ambient Occlusion with all those settings available (especially the Attenuation distance).
