Allow reorganizing assets across all files in the Asset Browser (and use tagging)
This is I believe the same idea as this one: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/mM89/
Problem
Currently, to organize catalogs and asset items in the Asset Browser, we need to open the original .blend file where the assets live. This means if I want to reorganize existing assets into a different folder or category, I must locate and open each source file one by one, then move the items inside it.
This workflow quickly becomes painful when working with large libraries spread across many files. It discourages experimentation and refinement of asset organization because the process is too rigid.
Proposal
It should be possible to reorganize assets from any file directly within the Asset Browser, without having to open the original file.
Users could move assets between catalogs, rename them, or reassign categories in one place.
This could work through a tagging or proxy system so the actual assets remain untouched, but their organization is stored centrally.
The exact technical solution is less important than the user-facing flexibility: the Asset Browser should feel like a true library manager, not just a file viewer.
Extension: Tagging for Greater Flexibility
Another limitation of the current Asset Browser is that an asset can only live in one catalog at a time. In practice, creative workflows demand more flexibility: the same wood material I use for “bridges” might also belong in “materials” or “architecture.” Categorization is subjective and rarely fits neatly into a single folder.
A tagging system would allow assets to carry multiple labels, making them searchable by different criteria at once. This would transform the Asset Browser into a true library manager where organization adapts to the user’s needs, instead of forcing users into rigid one-category structures.
