'Snap using' UI indicator

Edit - Duplicate of CAD-like snapping objects (by basepoint)

It would be nice to have some indicator that lets me know which part of the mesh I'm about to grab, when snapping is on, both in mesh and object mode.

After I grabbed something, there's already a neat little circle indicating the target of the snapping. It would be helpful to have that circle (or something similar) to appear before I start to move the selected geometry or the mesh.

Visibility of the indicator should be toggleable for experienced users.

Here's vertex snapping in action in the Unity editor.

Here the indicator is a square, but the idea is the same. Unity also snaps the transform gizmo to the source geometry for the duration of the operation. That's also something to consider.

IMHO, I would considering that when you enable snapping, the behaviour of the move, scale and rotate operations should be slightly modified.

  • For the move operation, first click on a reference vertex, then click on a target vertex. This will allow for precise modeling which is why we intent with snapping.
  • For the rotate operation, first click on the reference vertex, then on the target vertex. The 3D cursor is then used for the rotation center, and the angle is determined by the two vertexes you clicked.
  • For the scale operation, same as rotate except that the scale factor is defined by the ratio equal to distance(vertex 2, 3d cursor) / distance(vertex 1, 3D cursor)

But this behaviour should be only valid when snapping is enabled.
