Proposal: Add Perceptual OkLab / OkHSL Color Spaces

Benefit of perceptual color space:

  • Perceptual color space create smooth perceptual gradient
  • Way less "color shift" or "color banding" and preserve "hue chroma" between color stops.

My suggestion Color Space for Color Ramp Gradient:

  • Use OkLab for Color Mode, and use Perceptual for Interpolation between color stops.
  • (Mockup) Comparison:

My suggestion Color Space for color picker:

  • For Color Picker, OkHSL (circle disk) or OkLCH (irregular shape of a slice of the gamut) is the best choices in my opinion (image below)

I am glad this new proposed Color Ramp is possible in Blender. Thank you for letting me know!! Still, I prefer native Blender support for it. This is essential feature in my opinion

It's not just color ramps, it's the color pickers as well.

OKLab support was asked a few months ago already: Support Oklab Color Space — Right-Click Select . It would be nice to upvote that one first IMHO since it will give it more visibility and ramps will come with it "for free".

Down in the comments there is a nice article shared: An interactive review of Oklab | Raph Levien’s blog

Thank you!

I updated the link in References to Raph Levien's blog, and also gave an upvote for that "Support Oklab Color Space" Idea.

I was though Blender 5.0 already introduced Perceptual in color picker. But you are right, the color picker still use "HSV" color space, not OkLCH/OkHSV/OkLab color space.

Actually I prefer working with OkHSV or OkLCH since it's more intuitive to work with than OkLab.

The perceptual option intruduced in 5.0 relates to how you pick colors perceptually relative to the scene's color management.
