Extend Borders / Edges - 3DS Max and Maya Feature
Hi all, I would like to be able to extend the borders of a selection similarly to the Extend Borders script in 3ds Max. This is a pretty standard feature that a lot of artists use in-house both in 3ds Max and in Maya.
I am slowly trying to move artists away from Autodesk packages and am finding small things in Blender that could be improved to make the switch slightly easier!

It looks like bad complex way instead fast insert-extrude. But For edge offset there is addon: blenderartists.org/t/offset-edges/584283/253
Available for 2.79 and 2.8 already
* @ Vyacheslav * I was going to say, we already have this with the Offset Edges Addon. Happy Offsetting!
Offset edges comes bundled with Blender 2.80 as part of the "Mesh Tools" addon which can be found under the "Testing" tab in the addons preferences. It's really useful, but I wish it was modal instead of requiring adjustment in the Redo Panel.
* @ Vyacheslav * Thank you!!
Duplicate . Close both.
* @forestgumpovu4 * Your link seems to be broken. If you could fix your link, I could mark this post as a duplicate.
* @Jason van Gumster * My bad. Now it work. Close because in both cases solution is
Offset Edgesand already exist.but I agree, that there should be functions for dilate/erode edges, flat shapes and groups of naked edges.
So all you want is a better extrude tool.... Well, why not? 👍
It's not sufficient to point to another feature (or add-on) in another software. How would you expect this to work in Blender? What would be the places you would click or the hotkeys you'd press to activate it and control it?
It can't work exactly the same way because Blender has a different way of working (for instance, I wouldn't use it at all if it meant having a persistent window popped over my 3D Viewport.
* @Jason van Gumster * I don't mean to intrude but in my opinion optional features which has some similarities to this is very crucial to gain more users from other softwares. In my opinion there are a large population of 3d artist that would prefer to have a 3d model software that has a feel of architectural softwares.
I guess we should just open up the software for not just stylistic art but also for techincal and precise modeling. One compromise would be optional features that has some similarities with this one. Not necessarily like this but some tools that would take care of those needs.
I was planning to request an additional pivot point feature where it will automatically set the pivot point from the last extrusion when using a rotate widget and this is just some of the secondary tools.
I would like to share a link where it almost showcase all the important basic features that I am meaning to be added.

I hope the blender developers will not take this as an insult or disrespect in any shape or form. It just sometimes makes me contemplate why these things which I believe will truly make some of the artists workflow easier and faster especially to those who are more technically interested in measurement details, still not added as part of the default optional functions.
I hope it soon will be part of blender's future additions. Thanks.
* @johnpdelacruz26 * I'm not saying this feature wouldn't be useful. I'm saying that this proposal needs to be thought through more and described in such a way that it fits within Blender's way of doing things.
* @Jason van Gumster * I agree and I am not implying that that is what you are trying to say. I just wanted to chime in because I can relate to what he is experiencing in blender's interface. Blender is a capable software and sometimes this kind of tools are in my opinion should somehow already be a part of the optional tools in Blender.
This will in turn create an atmosphere for the outsiders to feel comfortable in transitioning or even deciding to use the software further because the tools which they think are essential are somewhat compensated by blender's optional functions.
These things doesn't need to happen right away but I hope in the near future the developers will make this also a part of their plans.
* @Jason van Gumster * I have been working on some production assets with Blender now. I think it's a great piece of software that is missing a few more precise features that other software have.
I only make suggestions of features that I know other artists need to use in a production workflow. A lot of people in-house where I work are very interested in Blender and I hope that some more precise modelling features are added (even optionally) to help more people make the switch.
* @stone.chris.10 * I'm not asking you to justify why you've proposed the feature. I'm asking you to make your proposal more clear and specific.
