Outliner - Make Object easier to find
When selecting an object in the 3D view it is hard to find where that object is located in the outliner. Especially in a long list with collapsed collections or when objects are parented.
It would be great to have some kind of indication highlight to the objects parent in the outliner.
- It will simply show the user a color indication on the objects which it is parented to.
- Specific color coding needs to be figured out.
- Selecting the 3D object will not expand the hierarchy
So that at that point you can easily find it!
hitting numpad "." finds the object in the outliner making it slightly less of an issue. Nontheless, the outliner being the tool that can help making sense of a complex hierarchy and scene structure could benefit from neat helpers like this.

I'm not sure I fully understand, but I'm pretty sure you already can use numpad "." to go to the selected object while hovering your mouse cursor over the outliner list (at least in Blender v2.93.4). It'll even expand a parent in the list if the selected object is parented to it.
(PS I use Q key because that's what my hotkey is set to).
This is not about finding an object in the outliner, it's to see it's location in the hierarchy at first glance once selected without pressing or clicking anything. It's pretty basic functionailty in literally every other software with on outliner and long overdue in Blender.
I didn't know the original poster meant to have it automatically highlighted. That actually might be a neat little thing to have.
Definitely. It's a must when working with complex scenes or rigs.
Ah you are right, hitting numpad "." will open the hierarchy and focus on the selection. Changing the post a bit now I know this

There has been proposals about child highlighting in collapsed hierarchies and it always hits a wall with the design team. I think it's borderline depressing to see an extremely basic thing like this get blocked.
At the very least it should be exposed in the theme settings.
