All those Ctrl/Alt/Shift combinations on images configured not in best way, I know this, but it limited due to currently existed behavior. After thinking on it more - I think current behavior could be changed as well, what allows more convenient modifier keys configuration.

Issue with currently existed behavior - free rotation start on any part of gizmo circle, widget activate closest to cursor axis element (not only when hovering on axis).

Things could be easier if widget has differetiated zomes. If free rotation will work by Hold & Move on widget circle backround but not on axis zone it will remove necessity of modifier key for axis relative rotation.

Rotation could look now like: just Hold & Move on axis - world axis relative rotaion, + Shift - swithc rotation behavior between around camera itself/arount rotation point in scene, + Ctrl add increment snapping to rotation.

Now when world axis rotation can start without Alt modifier key - it free to replace Ctrl modifier key for camera move. I really don't like proposed on pictures Ctrl modifier to move camera along axis. Blender typical Ctrl Behavior is some incremental or snaping...

With previously described changes moving could look like this: Alt now mean move actions - Alt + Hold & Move on axis will move along axis, same with Shift - move along two other axis plane, same with Ctrl add increment (like 1 meter steps or so).

Why posted this - two reasons.

  1. Current viewport orbiting implemented not in best way, feels not consistent. You can't orbit camera by mouse constrained to some world axis - it work like free rottaion with option to snap to top, front, etc. viewpoints. You could do camera orbiting/rolling constrained by numpad operators, but they work only incrementally - sometimes you need to rotate camera just a bit so this numpad thing not work. You can rotate camera around itself with walk/fly modes, but again it work like free rotation so no oprion for constrained to axis rotation.

  2. I had this Idea in around 2 years, but because it mean lot of (strange?) changes I didn't know how to summarize it all in best way... But I have now enough free time so I just post it finally to not forget.

After all, if you have read it all - thank you for your attention

I think that axes can be holded to rotate world, eg. shift+ clik x,y,z too. Can be additional button around gizmo to unhold when hold is activated. Check now.. cltr+MMB (measures of x axe, when mouse move on left right, but maybe shoudl be by y axe by move up and down)

Also MMB rounding around central, but ctr+MMB can rotate world? Then your yellow ring on gizmo can be like "compass" with rose, then we can change x,y,z for NESW. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compass_rose More comfy for building project and eg building addons.

I proposed something similar around keys control for view.

Also the control viewport by numeric as objects can be nice (eg. for screenshot - right angles of view)

It's something like addon "Cad Transform" but not for object but view.

Still problem with comfy work around viewport

In sumary maybe the Text info for gizmo like for object (but just on right side) Then convention can be like Text info object and Text info gizmo in menu "Viewpor Overlays" to hide this or turn off.
