Geometry nodes inset faces node
See thumbnail (and no, these node groups do not work, I just made them to demonstrate what it would look like)

Yes, having a parametric inset it's a good idea, strange we never had this or extrude as modifiers before

Like the Sorcar addon, having geometry nodes work with masks and all edit modifiers like a node version of the modeling api would be very very very very useful. Can we just clone and make it C?
* @Andres Stephens - Trinumedia * And also make it less buggy if were gonna clone it lol.
Personally I wonder if it wouldnt make sense to make future modeling tools a part of a API that takes care of any kind of mesh transformation, that can then be parsed to any interface like destructive mesh editing in edit mode or parametric mesh modeling in geometry nodes. So that we that way can have access to all modeling tools made in the future through modifiers, geometry nodes & simple edit mode operations.
Im glad to see tho that they are in fact thinking like this when it comes to modifiers and the node tree, they are currently reconstructing the modifiers so that modifiers will call the same code as there co-responding geometry nodes.
* @Willy Wonka * That's comforting.
Inset with all parameters, it will also work for extrude, if we inset at 0 but have some depth value.
just inset without facemap or face indices will not do a lot. So i would prefer indices at first
* @ Vyacheslav * You are absolutely right there must at least be some way of filtering the geometry
I didnt put face indices in but I did put a suggestion for a node that can filter geometry by vertex groups whilst preserving edges in my other suggestion: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/vkhbbc/ The request didnt become quite as popular as this one however

Hi I was looking for exactly the same thing and then I realized that with Extrude face and Scale Face node from 3.1 you can achieve an inset if you set the extrude offset to 0? docs.blender.org/manual/en/3.1/modeling/geometry_nodes/mesh/scale_elements.html
Not quite exactly. Sadly, many people don't see the difference between scale and inset. Take an ellipse-shaped face as an example: scaling and insetting / offsetting gets you very different outputs. The actual solution has been posted here: blenderartists.org/t/geometry-nodes-is-there-a-way-to-inset-faces/1345320/2
There's also a dude, Blender Bash, who sells such node group for 5$, but you can get it for free from the thread I linked.
On a sphere, would it inset every individual face on the ball? Or would it be some kinda angle detection
