Solidify Modifier on World Coordinates and Custom Normals

At the moment the Solidify modifier extrude along the face normals, which is nice.

It would be cool if it had some more options such as add thickness on Global Coordinates and custom normals. Very helpful especially for hardsurface modeling

Cheers

A classic example of this is using the Solidify modifier to create separate bricks from the topology of curved surfaces. For this, you would need to split edges, and extrude along the previously interpolated vertex normals, before splitting. This, and many other modelling functions, could be achieved, if the Solidify modifier had the option to use Custom Normals, e.g from a Data Transfer, further up the stack.

Edit: IMO, Geometry Nodes make this request redundant.

I wish I could upvote this more than once. It will be a gamechanger for many to have custom normals option. An example is sheet metal with large flat faces (set as strong faces for vertex normal calculation) and bent regions (set as medium and weak faces). Current solidify doesn't take it into consideration and you will end up with this imgur.com/a/7dLkhhO . Its a pity we still don't have this option, especially knowing that the Displace modifier already has custom normals option

For the X,Y,Z directions there is a hack to scale the object in editmode and the opposite in objectmode ( blender.stackexchange.com/a/190972 )

Good idea, but you can already solidify along an axis with the screw modifier. The only problem is you can't have less than 1 loop cut, so your suggestion would be an improvement.

Agreed! And this too please .

Oops, sorry! I forgot that I had already commented this, but I don't see a delete comment button. 😊

+1 Useful function.

Yes!

I expect the custom normal thing to be possible eventually with the everything nodes project... but who knows when that will happen.

Seconded and upvoted.

I'd love to see this as well .
