Unified import dialog that can handle multiple filetypes. Open FBX, OBJ, etc., without having to close/open multiple dialogs.
It's extremely common to go to import an asset that you think is in one format (FBX for example) but is in another (OBJ). Or even go to open a .blend file but realize that it's an FBX.
Currently you have to go to file -> import and choose between 13 different options. 14 if you include file -> open for .blend files. If you choose the wrong type you'll have to then close the window, pick another file -> import option, navigate to the same folder again (the folder stack isn't saved if you hit cancel), and try to import again.
There should be a unified file import dialog that can handle multiple file types, like most programs do. E.g., in Photoshop you can import a bmp, jpg, png, etc., from a single file picker dialog.
This is currently an annoyance and wastes some time, and there's no user-based reason for it to be like this. I'm assuming it's a technical limitation, but that should be abstracted away when it interferes with an artist workflow like this.

great idea! Also "import images as planes" shouldn't be an addon you have to activate when new, but it should be default blender behavior, I use this more than all other add image options (in the shift+A menu) combined. And for adding different filetypes, the same should be possible in the VSE, add mediafile with a single option and not split in different mediatypes. imagesequences should default to generate a strip in the VSE imho as you can split them again after importing anyways.

in development since 2019? OMG! :(
hehehe.... the actual development never started... this is more like an item in a "wishlist" 🤣
how about opening fbx files with blender or allowing the user to drag fbx onto blenders window?
This would be a big win for a better, simpler interface! Less time thinking & picking what's the correct file type...just import and keep Blendin:)
I'm extremely hopeful that this gets added soon, because it's frustrating to find things if I forgot what file format they are, so I have to keep switching the import mode
same for export
+1 also there should be multiple import and multiple export of obj/fbx enabled by default, and keep the "selected only" as the default one as I continue to do the mistake of export the entire 7gb scene every fu*king time even after +5years of experience with blender...
Amen to this!
Yes please! This desperately needs to be a feature.
