Right-Click and Left-Click solution for everyone!
Currently (In vesion Alpha 2 of Blender 2.8) the default tool for the left button is the 3D cursor. This means that the original function of the left button remains the same as it has always been in previous versions.
The other selection and transformation tools of the new toolbar change the functionality of the 3D cursor to selection tools by window (Box, Circle or Lasso), and transformation tools (Move, Rotate, Scale and Scale Cage).
My proposal is as follows:
-
Keep the selection with the right button as default exactly as it is and always has been.
-
Keep the 3d cursor to left button as default as it is and always has been.
This would keep all traditional Blender users happy. In addition, the next proposal will leave Blender totally inviting to new users without taking anything away from traditional users. -
Make the window selection tools and the transformation tools of the new tool bar ALSO work as selection tools with the left button.
In other words: When a window selection tool or a transformation tool is active in the tool bar, these tools would work in the same way as the Autodesk tools:
Left click to select; Left click and drag to use the active tool (selection window or transformation tool in question); Left click and drag in an empty place of the screen to clear the selection;
And to make everyone happy, the selection with the right button does not have to stop working at any time because of this.
That means there would be virtually no change to traditional Blender users, as they pretty much do not use the toolbar tools and do pretty much everything from shortcuts.
And that would also mean Blender would seem perfectly normal for a new user or someone coming from other softwares since for making selections in 3DS Max for example you need to be with an active selection or transformation tool active to select objects.
Do not get me wrong, please, guys. I have been using Blender for a few years now and I EVEN PREFER TO WORK WITH THE RIGHT-CLICK MYSELF! But I also work as a teacher and teach modeling and animation in Blender. I truly believe that this configuration would perfectly suit both requirements: The great functionality of Blender's traditional configuration with an exceptionally ease for new users to adapt to the new platform.

Well, we got the LEFT Clicker and the context menu. There is only one thing left - THE DWG IMPORT.
This Left-Right click is just insane! Can that be unified with the rest of the world and abolish right-click doing the main job!? I know you hard wired blenderers love the right click, just because you got used to that, but the rest of the world is in pain when trying to switch to Blender. It would have been way easier for a lot of people in the business to switch if that insane right-click thing is a matter of choice instead of forceful, ignorant wish of the developers involved, just because they are used to that.
@slavi.hristozov: But don't you think this way it could work? I mean, if you are using 3DS max, for example, you have to activate a selection o a tranfrorm tool (that also work as selection tools) to select sfuff. If this new blender selection and transform tools just worked as Industry Standard selection and transform tools when active, Blender would feel Industry Standard for those arriving. Specialy if, lets say, the select box tool is the one active as default. The right click could remain working as selection button both when the transform and selection tools of the tool bar are active and when they are not.
My vision here is as a teacher. I have taught hundreds of blender new students already and I feel that this way would be intuitive for them without taking the precious right click from classic users.
In some situation, as when in edit mode, I believe the right click selection could prevail, because that would separate the action click from the selection click. But in this point of the learning process the new users would be already confortable with blender and they would not have suffered this first "traumatic experience" of the right click.
@gustavorosa: Hello Gustavo. When you click/select in Max for an action you get an action box with options and preserve your left-click for more like subactions and therefore. I am not speaking for the rest of the world (my apologies) but since this is a "worldwide" approach why not try and at least give an option for the left-clickers. Again, I would have been a Blender user many years ago if it was not for the right-click action. I confess - I am trying very hard right now to do that switch from Max 2 Blender, but it is not as easier as I would like :). AnywayI I am just fuming my frustration about right-clicking actions. I thought it is going to be dealt with in the new version in a more practical way but Ton Roosendaal just showed me a middle finger right at the beginning of the opening speech for the Blender conference. And we are back right where that conversation was - nowhere.
@gustavorosa i think i came up with even better solution before your post, thought this is also pretty nice. blender.community/c/rightclickselect/Hjcbbc/
@Omgzdenek: Hi Omgzdenek. I likde your solution. Maybe it is even better for advanced users. But I think this one is seamless for new users, for those arriving from other softwares and does not take almost anything from Classic Blender Users.
Do not get me wrong but I use mouse this way - LMB for select, RMB for deselect, shift + MMB to place 3D cursor. Right now in 2.8 if select on right button - " active tool " occupy left, if select on left - active go to right. And I don't find any ways to remap this shit. And if someone start talking about solution for everyone - the only what I want to ask is let me remap all this " active " stuff to something else and continue use my mouse same way I use it right now ...
