hey Pablo great work again , what s the move with the new realtime direction of blender , proceduralism , geometry nodes , interactivite systems , sensor support .....?

Hey Pablo, since the previous stream was the first stream of the year after a long break and I had no question but this time I’m gonna ask a question that I did ask on the last BT stream you did with Ton and Francesco on the #250 episode, but unfortunately you kinda misread it, so I’ve been waiting like a year to ask you this question again lol.

Not really a feature request but since the Blender studio influences the development of Blender, will Blender studio work on more photoreal/live action VFX open movies in the future? Considering, there has been a massive surge of NPR stuff from Blender studio and b3d community on the internet, where the last live action open movie was from 2012 (Tears of Steel) and Charge (2022) was also another great one, but it wasn’t like 1-1 photoreal.
Only if then , we might be gradually able to get improved tools for photoreal VFX workflows in Blender (as more and more small indie studios and solo artists are working on big budget projects, and they are choosing Blender) to be able to better work with photoreal complex high-poly characters with improved shape keys, facial mocap, a native mocap retargeting system, layered skin simulation, muscle sim and everything else people do in CFX, deepEXR export and be able to work with big complex scenes with lots of polygons, heavy VDBs etc. efficiently sort of like the “high-poly” mode previously talked about.

seconding this. I really, really would like to see more VFX/replacement/chromakey/ tracking/live action integration stuff in general. it's gone largely unchanged for nearly a decade, but I was with them at siggraph when sybren added a script to track deforming meshes overnight! we can definitely do more here!

XanzulsCG

Absolutely. We need that stuff more from Blender studio and in Blender.

Hola Pablo! So good to see you back!

Some months ago, Blender did its first official survey. I don't know if you're able to share, but I was curious to know if the survey gave some interesting insights about Blender and its current state, and if already influenced in some way the development objectives of the near future of the software.

Long live Blender.Today !

Hey, Pablo! I was wondering if there's any chance of this issue getting resolved at some point: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/4L8g/

It's been an issue for a long time now and it makes it difficult to re-adjust pivots and object to exact coordinates or rotations without affecting child objects or only affecting pivots. This is a pretty big issue when making models that require precise transforms.

For example as of right now you can't easily adjust a parent object with a rotation of 179.5347 to 180 or move an object from X: 2.061834 to X:2.0 without affecting child objects.

I raised this issue years ago on the bug-report but it got closed as it was deemed more of a feature request than a bug: projects.blender.org/blender/blender/issues/91925

Let me know if I should raise another bug-report or re-open the old one or what else would be the best way to get this issue addressed.

Would be nice to get a fix for Winter of Quality or possibly later.

Thanks

OI, Pablo! remember me?! glad to see the blender today crew back around, and sorry I couldn't make your first stream back! I promise I watched it twice.

devtalk.blender.org/t/cycles-and-surface-normals-normalmap-shading/38176/31 I've been working on my first actual functional changes in blender (the Cycles kernel is a wicked challenge for a new dev!) I'm trying to fix the "corrected normals" and maybe do some Parallax occlusion mapping. normal maps have a very troubled relationship with Cycles... we know they're faked shading, getting them looking as expected should be paramount over technically correct. and I'm going to need the render tests!

Any tips for someone just getting started diving into the code? also, how is the texture/baking and updated video clip modules coming along? longtime wishlist items, there!

nubnubbud

is it bad juju to double-post? probably. projects.blender.org/blender/blender/issues/113455

my issue here is still active, because it turns out it's intended, more or less. The issue is that nodes like colorramp are splines in the backend! As nice as they are, they don't make geometrically smooth curves, and have a resolution limit.
