Native Parallax mapping
Parallax texture mapping displaces the texture coordinates by the angle at which the model is looked at. This is a great way to fake depth on materials without actually needing to subdivide the mesh and move vertexes. It's relatively very fast and looks really convincing.
Here's is a good comparison between parallax mapping and normal mapping: encelo.netsons.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/normal_parallax.jpg
However, to get parallax mapping to work in blender, you either have to build complex node setups, download these node setups, or get an OSL script for that, which does not work on GPU.
There could be a straightforward native way to get this to work in Blender.
Perhaps as a Mode for the displacement input of the "material output" node. Currently, the modes are "Bump only", "Displacement only" and "Displacement and Bump". There could also be an option "Parallax", which just converts displacement into texture coordinate displacement. That's it. A quick solution.
There could also be a new node specifically dedicated to parallax mapping that you plugin to texture vector input. Something along those lines.
There's also a popular way to use parallax mapping to simulate windows with Architectural 3D interiors, but as textures on simple planes. And the implementation mentioned above will not work here. There could be a dedicated node for that...

Seems to be just for eevee tho, and abandoned by the developer. Good start tho!
In first link its in official eevee next as " Nice to have but non blocker.", so i will probably come in eventually. And there is light goal of having majority of feature parity, so i guess it could go into cycles too.
Anyway "which does not work on GPU." OSL is comming to Cycles OptiX, maybe even in next release.
It's been requested a bunch of time already:
And as pointed y zuorion, there is some development activity around it. It's on the spot for Eevee's rewrite so I guess we might get POV "soon". And maybe see it ported on Cycles at the same time or down the road. Hopefully.
