Is A Blur Shader Node Theoretically Possible?
I wonder if a blur shader node is theoretically possible in Blender's shader node architecture? Meaning is it possible to access pixels from the input image at a different location as would be provided per default to the node? If yes then I'd look into writing such a node. Just want to know if it is theoretically possible so that I don't waste time if it isn't. :D
This idea was marked as a duplicate of Blur Node .

Afaik it would be only possible as a precomputation process, as in, bake and then blur a texture. You can't blur it while pathtracing it. There's lot o proposals about this topic. I made my own too , limiting it to image texture blur, as a precomputation process
It is not only possible already. It is also very easy to use. I don't know what all the people are on about, but in cycles this has been there since the beginning so stop asking for it! please! If you want a blurred image texture, just blur it before you put it into blender (or use blenders compositor to render out a blurred image if you want to do it in blender) {attachment 2020-06-21_00-07-04mp4}

* @weasel * That's the sample position randomization, right? That's not good enough. Not a proper blur, looks ugly, and I'd assume won't work right when you use this e.g. as input for displacement. I'd assume you either get the 100% or 0% (if you blur black and white), but never a 50%.
* @grosser.meister.morti * first off it looks awesome, not ugly! (Ok granted thats opinion based, but I like noise, the denoiser can get rid of it though) Secondly for displacement do the sampling in the shader like I did here. You would need to go through the implementation of a gaussian blur though, because I didn't here. I think this might be a Tent Blur or something like that. It can not work as a out of the box standalone node, because it needs to encapsulate a node inside that should get blurred. {attachment 2020-06-21_00-39-53mp4}
* @weasel * You can't animate the blur radius this way, with your image pre-blurred :-(
