Draw cuts (Knife tool)

You have poly modeling and push and pull in the same program , that will be a sketchup & max destroyer , but how about making it a death machine ? I suggest to add Draw knife cuts for basic geometrical shapes (rectangle , circle ) according to normal orientation and it will be nicer if a little bit snappy (dimensions shown relative to drawing face) 😁 because as an architect I find it quite handy to have neat cutting tools with the new dissolve and extrude tool in blender 2.9

I agree. Blender's 3d modelling would greatly benefit from those basic cad tools.

Blender already has a knife tool?

(Ignore this, just read through your other conversation explaining exactly what you are looking for)

* @evan.page * I actually can't understand what you mean exactly but I guess you want to say that someone else has suggested this feature , I know ... there is plenty of them actually but the idea is to link this feature to the new extrude tool , it will transform solid modeling in a huge way when combined with this one , but before it was a bit pointless to add specially when we see boxcutter and hardops work , not too expensive to buy them and they are pretty neat

evan.page

* @bassem.adel * I made a comment saying that Blender already has a knife tool, which it does. But after reading some of the other comments I realised that you were after particular features for the tool that don't natively exist in Blender.

* @evan.page * yes , and I feel they are going in that way , pretty impressive how reponsive blender developers are

It was one of main reasons why old program Sketchup was soooo fast for modeling hard surface stuff. +1 !

* @IIIFGIII * Does it have edge/object dimension assignment functionality that is quick and consistent? That is the only feature that blender lags behind when it comes to working closer to basic precision modelling tools.

I am not sure boxcutter, hardops, and other hard surface modelling have that.

* @IIIFGIII *, Boxcutter is a great add-on, but it can't do everything for everybody. Sometimes you really need the right tool to do the specific job. Blender's native Knife tool is quirky, feature limited, and could benefit from some developer TLC (Tender Loving Care).

IIIFGIII

* @dcb.creative * Nothing can do" everything for everybody ". Boxcutter can do exactly what suggested - start point, drag, endpoint to cut box or any other shape, what ever you need. End even much much more... If u just don't want to pay for it - just say so.

dcb.creative

* @IIIFGIII *, I paid for Boxcutter, and HardOps. Use them, and find them nice tools, but would prefer if Blender's native Knife tool was more capable and didn't require add-ons to supplement.

* @dcb.creative * The fact that it is not in core package - let's look at this as basic Blender and advanced additions. It is paid - Blender is not free as well, just " someone else " pay, not " you ". It made for Blender, it good integrated with UI, it exist, it is almost 99% native part of Blender.

dcb.creative

* @IIIFGIII *, yeah. Um, no. Let us agree to disagree. I am done with this thread.

johnpdelacruz28

* @dcb.creative * I can see the other points that organic artists are trying to make. They technically focus on designs that don't require some form of world based precision. I fully get the stylized/organic side of things but I hope blender would atleast cater those supporters that are also on the basic precision side. Most of the updates are often focused on those users, it would be nice atleast once this time around they would add some optional tools or maybe an editor that would implement those basic cad tools that are often requested. The top three would be:

  1. Knife tool as a multipurpose precision tool that can display length and can also generate curves via hotkey.

  2. Easier, controllable, and more consistent Dimension assignment feature in edit mode. Currently it is almost impossible to edit an edge length without taking a great amount of time.

  3. Additional snapping options which includes the option to snap on specific angles (15, 30, 90).

To be clear, everything could be possible already in blender. The main problem is it takes far too much steps and time to achieve a specific action/work; could probably take weeks to finish a specific kind of intermediate project. I hope the organic modellers would also atleast support this cause and see it as a form diversity among mediums/styles. I am also interested in organic modelling but there are times when you really need to achieve a specific dimension or cuts that could not be done alone quickly by manual concepts, this is when the basic cad tools could come in handy. This is purposely built for precision modelling but organic modelling can also take advantage and benefit from it in multiple cases.

* @dcb.creative * Ok. It started from I just showed that here addon and it do exactly what was suggested. I still don't get the point what all this 21(at this moment) people voted for.... Have a nice day.

johnpdelacruz28

* @IIIFGIII * If you try cad tools most of it are accompanied with clean dimension display while the tools are at work. Currently I believe none of the addons mentioned does that. Everything is just eyeballed. These tools are technically considered organic for the reason that everything is still created through artistic decisions and not by real world object based demensions.

To make this a little bit black and white, I would suggest for you to create a camera producr model that is atleast precise on all of its primary and secondary parts; not including the tertiary parts which might be hinting for you to use a pure cad software already. The main point is to make a semi precise model in blender with the help of the basic tools not necessarily most of it but only the tools a 3d modelling software like blender would also benefit to and could potentially be a game changer to its already powerful workflow for stylized/organic modelling.

* @IIIFGIII * ok I have no problem to buy it but it is not meant for architecture , also it has fiddly shortcuts and isolated modeling environment

1
bassem.adel Author

* @IIIFGIII * box cutter it is not meant for architecture , Also it is just a knife tool perk , boxcutter is pretty cool but hey ... it is for machines modeling and not so precise as I expected πŸ˜…

1
bassem.adel Author

* @dcb.creative * that is the right saying , also it is just a very simple addition not a big deal , for box cutter didn't find it handy for architecture due to isolated modeling environment , but if you find what you need right inside modeling mode I guess it will be better

bassem.adel Author

* @johnpdelacruz28 * blender deals with things a bit differently , I thought at the beginning when I tried 2.8 that I may use it only for EEVEE but not for modeling , but what is done in 2.81 is a huge leap for me also it has far superior tools for modeling than 3ds max , so ... just ignoring some pixel perfect details won't hurt even in 3ds max , it won't add to rendering or visualization anything , but architectural instincts makes you ... errggh , I want this on that πŸ˜‚ even if it won't add anything to the work

johnpdelacruz28

* @bassem.adel * You have a point. There are just some tools that makes everything fast. Imagine a knife tool with a dimension/angle measurement info while in use; and also instead of only having 45 degree angle snapping, it can also snap optionally to 15,30, and increments.

The main reasoning for the requests are mainly not for aesthetics but specifically for workflow speed. As I have said earlier possibly almost everything is already achievable in blender's 3d modelling, the only issue is how fast can you do the task. Sure there are paid addons already for some of those things but it would be nice to have these optional tools as part of the installed software.

IIIFGIII

* @bassem.adel * I don't use Boxcutter as well - I bought it with hardops, but never used for work. I have too much custom shortcuts and I don't like when something try to override/overlap with it all. You asked for some " drag to cut box shapes " so I show this addon.

I work with architecture too and I use for such cases knife project. It even better kind of - If I need just cut 20 similar window holes, etc. Or, for example, I place " cutter " shape for all the fasades and then just cut all in few moves. Also after knife project I keep " cutter " shapes as separate object what is useful when it need to reproduce cut action with other object. Eg. here I had to made this brick stripes as separate object, mapp it for specific brick tile and then cut same holes in this object.

And this suggestion is not first. At least here and here kind of similar suggestions. I just tired to write everywhere " duplicate, please use search".

bassem.adel Author

* @IIIFGIII * I don't know why you are so sad about adding this feature 😁

You are right about suggesting this feature is not new and I kinda felt it is not a bright idea or a new thing to add , it is all over the place but I saw the posts and let me tell you why they didn't get much attention like what I suggested here

The first post was a bit unclear and not dedicated to anything , like just add shapes with no obvious mechanism or any link to why we need it ... second post on the other hand is almost the same idea of the first, just add shapes to knife tool

but what made this hot so fast is the fact of linking it to an upcoming feature which is extrude dissolve in 2.9 which is a destructive approach and it doesn't consider topology anyway , so that is the best time to do it now , before it won't make any sense as it can be done non-destructively using boolean and other tools that already in blender like carver and bool tool , but now as you can see , this will improve architectural design process alot

1
IIIFGIII

* @bassem.adel * emm... Sad? I said no word against this suggestion.

Your suggestion say no word about snap or else - actually it 100% fit to Boxcutter. Then people started generate more and more features in comments. So ok.. Why not. But such suggetions - please " make everything better " not work.

Good luck.

bassem.adel Author

* @IIIFGIII * I actually said it will be great to make it "snappy" by adding dimensions , and box cutter has nothing to do with this suggestion as it is not the same thing , box cutter is more volumetric cutting not like skethcup at all which I suggest here, it works differently as you also don't use it like me , then it has something missing for us as architects , which is in-referencing while dragging cuts like sketchup , you see what I meanπŸ˜… ?

johnpdelacruz28

* @bassem.adel * This puts a highlight on how important duplicates are. Respectfully not all original feature request are complete or in any way the end of all. If that is not true then, there would be no reason why would a company hire a cluster of great minds to brainstorm. All great ideas that you see in different kinds of companies were lead through a rigorous amount of trial and error and also idea stacking.

I would high encourage all the blender users to be more enthusiastic about duplicates. This just means that there will be more chance of the idea improving and hence makes it easier for other users to upvote the general idea of the proposals.

This is not in any way to discourage the original post. It is just a way of expressing and sharing some additional ideas. Blender is open source anyway, it is fitting then for us to brainstorm each ideas. It would be nice for right click select to have some kind of feature that would link or in some ways group a duplicate to the original via link or thumbnail in the side panel of the browser.

bassem.adel Author

* @johnpdelacruz28 * off course it is not original , I know that pretty well even without searching , it is found in sketchup since the early 2000's , but what made me do this post is to link the upcoming feature (extrude dissolve) with this proposal , but before it was pointless and it is better to do it the classic way for precision , so we can say it is a reminder 😁

johnpdelacruz28

* @bassem.adel * I get what you mean, Though I still hope basic cad tools and functionalities be added in blender, maybe as an editor or blender developed addon but this is another topic of it own.

einstein.turek

Knife tool could at least snap to model axes, instead of just snapping orthogonally to screen.

bassem.adel Author

* @einstein.turek * there is a nifty tool added recently called make line ... quite close to this post , just rectangle cutting tool and we are done πŸ€“

einstein.turek

* @bassem.adel * Do you mean a native tool or Construction Lines addon? I can see nothing like "make line".
