Destructive Extrude (Push and Pull) for Blender 2.8

Blender 2.79 has an amazing add-on from creator "darcvizer" which mimics Google Sketchup's "push and pull" feature. While at first glance it might not seem useful considering we have "booleans" and add-ons like "BoxCutter" but in reality this "tool" really deserves to be paid more attention.

Using Destructive Extrude (DE) will allow you to massively speed up the creation of mesh block-outs. It is especially useful in 3D environment creation to measure proportions and scale.

  • This tool gives you the opportunity to extrude the polygons inwards and remove crossed edges like shown below in Blender 2.79.
  • This tool would fit very well with Blender 2.8's vision to become one of the more "intuitive" "usable" 3D modeling packages. Modeling using "DE" is very fun and is a great way to introduce newcomers to modeling while at the same time being a powerful tool for the experienced user.

gustavorosa

I want it! :)

gustavorosa

@gustavorosa:

LambruscoKid

Pretty darn useful feature! We need it in 2.8

9
Kavukamari

oh that'd be neat as an option for normal extrude

like a checkbox for "destructive" or whatever

8
reoxurrino

When people swtich from Sketchup to Blender They'd want this tool...

8
Lauloque

I think it's asked since 2.6 at least, I'm impressed it's the first RCS topic about it.

7
NavWombat

I think it deserves its own tool icon on the tool shelf.

6
DB3D

@wondraknathan: no just its place among variation of the extrude tool

1
Lauloque

I don't have 2.8 right now but if I'm correct there is a tool icon for regular extrude. We coul have a drop down (like the selection tools icons) to have all the different extrudes.

DB3D

@loic.dautry: exactly

1
NavWombat

@loic.dautry: Yep exactly, thats what I was imagining.

did someone tried at once design spark 2015? this was awsome for destructive extrude compared to sketchup...you can extrude everything you want. and bevel were terrible too. and the intelligent snap totally amazing too. But I decided to stay only on Blender since. But I still hope such usefull evolutions will come soon, after 1 year and alf of Blender. But I have still so much to learn so I'm not hurry. and I know it will

1COD

incredible it's still not implemented

3
MetinSeven

I'd love to see this in Blender too. Until it's implemented you can use this add-on: gumroad.com/l/cQjUX

This way of "destructive" extruding, a.k.a. push-pull modeling is protected by U.S. patent: patents.google.com/patent/US6628279 As far as I know, the utility patents expire 20 years after they are filed, so this particular patent expires on Nov 22, 2020.

3

@ambroz: brokend link , did sketchu seriously did that ?

jendrzych

@dodododorian: Strange - the link works for me... Search the net for "us patent US 6628279".

1
remosande Author

@ambroz: link works for me but I doubt this patent interferes with this tool. Afaik "extrude" and "bevel" are patented as well but it didn't stop other applications to use them. In the end it is all "semantics" as one could make the case that "destructive extrude" (DE) is different enough to "sketch-up push and pull".

quincy.cgi

this tool would be so nice to work with and it would speed a modeling a lot

3
alokahluwalia

this simple yet powerful tool is a boon for architectural modeling. Pls include this as native in 2.8

2
WickedInsignia

100x yes. As far as I know, there's quite a few paid packages lacking on this feature so it's a good way to get Blender ahead too!

2
luisocherubini

Great Idea!

2
FalconCreates

It's a great feature. It should be a part of the program.

2
TheRedWaxPolice

Great tool for sure... But what's the request? To be native in blender, to make the addon compatible with 2.8, to bundle the addon with blender???

2
remosande Author

@theredwaxpolice: Ideally the goal is to make this a NATIVE Blender tool, something that can help distinguish Blender from other modeling apps.

Its hard to tell how much work this tool requires to be ported to 2.8. I first wanted to find out if there is enough interest in such a tool and it seems there definitely is!

6
testure

@theredwaxpolice: Apparently the addon can't be ported to 2.8 as it used the Carve api, which was removed after 2.79. The author says it could be done in BMesh, but it would be significantly slower than a native extrude since the geometry operations would be happening in Python.

1
remosande Author

@eldee.smith: Do you happen to know why they removed the Carve API ?

testure

@remosande: It's an external library that is somewhat error prone. It was replaced with a native solution that is tightly integrated with bmesh. Bmesh itself is not slow when you're using native tools (like the boolean modifier), but the problem with doing any kind of significant mesh modification in an addon is the python bottleneck.

wouterstomp

Great news: This is coming to Blender 2.90 with the Extrude, Dissolve and Intersect tool!

1
MaciekJutrzenka

plz change status to in Development as there is even already build with this.

little tuto I just did a mutlijoin addon too quite usefull with the destructive extrude youtu.be/Im7Jwzq7V7Q it will be cool the destructive extrude do a remove double at the end

Vyach

* @fabiocroldan * addon works much better, since i tried it last time. Hardly recommend it.

belimlin

Great feature and a splendid addon.

1
moeeo

After the Smart Extrude feature was added to Max, Maya was next to include this capability, and we are still waiting for Blender to implement this excellent feature.

suhail1

we have it, the extrude manifold... u can get the same result!!!!

FreeMind

This tool Essential. There is destructive extrude implemented in current (Blender 3.6 alpha), but it's very buggy!

mistakd1

why don't we have this already? It would save so much time.

titus.mailbox

It is done already by MACHIN3, addon name is Punch It! (it's commercial)

Here are links:

softyoda

Can't this proposal be marked as done ? (as it seems solved in recent version of blender)

slowk1d

This should marked as done, it's 4 releases that we have this.

mrajendra2150

Remove the post because it was implemented.

Lauloque

* @mrajendra2150 * no, it just should be marked as done

testure

* @-L0Lock- * personally I wouldn't call it done since it doesn't handle the 'push through' scenario at all currently, which is one of the more useful features of Destructive Extrude

1
jfaurbo

Can we have a hotkey to switch back and forth between normal extrude and destructive? blender.community/c/rightclickselect/jZfbbc/

arkoprobhogupta23

it is not as good as it is in sketchup....

simon.p.heggie

This should be set to 'done'. :)

silex

This should be tagged as In Development.

xan2622

It's finally coming: youtu.be/k-mmpqH6wsA

Rosario_Rosato

This version works with Blender 2.80 ExtrudePull

darcvizer

And who said that I want my script to be in a blender?

testure

* @darcvizer * nobody is talking about adding your script to blender- we're talking about adding the same type of functionality (which is to say- sketchup's push-pull functionality).

1
johnpdelacruz26

Hello guys. I would like to propose an additional type of destructive extrude aside from the original one.

Here is the link. Thanks. blender.community/c/rightclickselect/P2dbbc/

CandleComet

what about the patent thing?

testure

* @CandleComet * the patent expired last year iirc

CandleComet

It says the 'adjusted expiration' is 2021-05-06

raindrops.fromsky

There is another proposal that is duplicate of this. blender.community/c/rightclickselect/Ywcbbc/

Unfortunately because of duplication, the votes are split. But if counted together, they have 337 votes as on today.

Does this qualify this issue for implementation? If not, what's the threshold number of votes?

Lauloque

It doesn't work that way. Devs won't develop something as soon as it reaches some vote number.
This sites makes only a few things:

  • make proposals together and enhance them
  • allow the userbase to discuss about proposals
  • have all the proposals gathered in one place, which is easy to track, both for users and devs
  • indicate the user's interest or opposition to proposals

The only real effect it has on the development, is to eventually bring ideas the devs didn't have, and show them where there is some demand.

And that's it. For a proposal to be taken into a development cycles, there are other things to look at :

  • Is the proposal technically possible (if not, can it be adapted in oder to make it possible still, or does it require to develop something else first, or...)
  • Does it fit into Blender's goals, design paradigm, ....
  • Is there a dev available and willing to work on it
  • Where does the proposal lands in the tasks list (there's already tons of things to do, and they each have their priority level)
  • and probably a lot of other things that I can't think of right now.
1
testure

Not to mention the fact that if a couple of bugs get fixed in BMesh, destructive extrude (the addon) will work again. The dev responsible for bevels is looking into boolean improvements, including a solution to the coplanar boolean bug, so one could say that this feature is already being worked on (in an indirect way). Just keep your shirt on and be patient, good things are coming :)

1
Lauloque

* @testure * I remove my shirt if I want to! >:3

raindrops.fromsky

* @-L0Lock- * Thanks for the insight!

Yes, this meeting of minds has its own tremendous value. And the developers get a mature and robust design idea.

raindrops.fromsky

* @testure * That's even better news! After all, bugs are likely to be taken up much sooner than a new feature!

raindrops.fromsky

I am a power user of SketchUp, and its Push/Pull tool is definitely much more intuitive than how the Extrude tool works in Blender. Definitely needed in Blender 2.8!

arqomes

Meu sonho é ver isso nativo no Blender

cccplex

Useful tool that would save time. I used the above addon but it was buggy.

There's also a another addon in the repos: developer.blender.org/diffusion/BA/browse/master/mesh_extra_tools/mesh_extrude_and_reshape.py

Anyone have any experience with that? I can't get it to work. It uses Bmesh so could be updated to 2.8 right?

Destructive extrude addon got a beta update for 2.8

You can download it here: blenderartists.org/t/destructive-extrude-beta/678275/245

ivilation

Hello, sorry for my rudeness, but i want to ask about my problem, i checked the whole internet and i couldnt find an answer. (When i press on cycles render, blender stop working instantly and crash immediatly??) If anyone have a fix for my glitch/bug please contact me.

bonalex01

Yes this would be awesome
