Move origin to center of mass : EDIT MODE not available?

Hi. I use 99% of the time this valuable function to move the ORIGIN to a selected group of vertices, in Blender 2.79 (with a py addon I can move the cursor tool to selected, then move the origin to that center, return the cursor tool back to the center of the scene). Could we make this a default option in EDIT MODE, MESH>ORIGIN>(the origin menu) . Thanks.

Seriously bonkers we need a script for this. I've been using this one in 2.79 ghigiblend.wordpress.com/2011/11/25/script-set-origin-to-selected-blender-2-6x/

The convoluted default process of moving the origin/pivot is something I clearly remember being one of my biggest hangups with Blender when I first switched.

@billyjonsmith: Same experience here. It was the first major issue I had with blender. It also prompted my dive into bpy, so I guess it was a worthwhile experience, but why should I have to write scripts to be able to set origins for multiple objects much less one. This has been a basic function of every software I've used which is quite a lot.

Yes we badly need an easier way to manipulate the object center.

Agree. I'm really missing Shift+Ctrl+Alt+C. It was a finger twister, but very useful and I used it all the time. Such a basic function, now buried in a menu.
