If the add-ons to the right ever get too crowded with tabs, a 2nd row could be an alternative.

I agree that the N tab is sub-optimal and would require some rethinking.
I don't have a better solution in mind yet, but I disagree about adding a 2nd row, UX-wise it's not good.
