Apply scale automatic

I don't know why we have to Apply Scale when we resize a primitive, I believe that scale should be automaticly applied then.

Scale it in edit mode.

You have to apply it only if you do something that needs it. Sometimes you precisely need to not apply it.

I would argue that auto-applying scale would actually create quite a lot of other issues due to it being something that happens in the background without your knowing, which for both new and experimented users is a nightmare to even know about.

Thank you for your comment, could you give me examples when you precisely need to not apply it, I've never face it before?

Sometimes i wanna scale the object without changing the look of my procedural material, which is built using object coordinate data, i always get into this situation.

Just to name a few:

  • animating scale
  • using scale as a driver or geonode input
  • physics simulations (you might need to use varied scales or even non-uniform ones for different results which 1:1:1 couldn't)
  • instanced/duplicated objects with different scales

And that's just cases where you need different scales. There are many cases where it doesn't hurt your work to have an unapplied scale, it's uneven scale that really hurts people's experience. And it requires doing specific operations like a bevel modifier or hierarchies to show potential unwanted effects.

There are also concerns that have been brought in the other similar proposals ( 1 , 2 , 3 ) and on the developer forum such as performances (rewriting every vertex at every object scale manipulation) cumulative imprecision, and plausible solutions being more thought as an option to auto-apply scale or in the tools behaviors themselves (e.g. allowing the bevel to ignore scale), or visual feedback to warn users about many plausible issues such as uneven/unapplied scale, inverted/inconsistend normals and whatnot.

I can't find topics about the latter anymore (I'm sure there was one on project.blender.org , or maybe on the chat), but that got brought up to public attention pretty well in How to Improve Blender's UI - Andrew Price — Blender Conference 2024 - YouTube which i recommend watching.

Thank you Lauloque, I didn't know all the issues.
