Face group and edge group suggestion

Thanks to blender team for improving daily and doing the best you can.

I have a suggestion, While having vertex group is a blessing, lack of face groups and edge groups is very annoying for some selections.

for example if you want to checker select some faces and save them as a selection for later modification, you just can't. You get what I mean by that.

You might find the Key Ops addon useful; it can create vert/edge/face groups (via attributes), which can then be used in various ways (nodes, shaders, selection, etc).

No need an addon for that. Just use the unified attribute system blender.stackexchange.com/q/337742/142292

No you don't need face groups or edge groups. Use the new unified attribute system that exists since Blender 4.0+ blender.stackexchange.com/q/337742/142292

As of blender 4.1, you can use nodetools to make them. It's as simple as Selection node connecting to Store Named Attribute's selection slot, set domain to Face or Edge, set data type to boolean, give it a name, and set the value to true.

To call it back, you connect a Named Attribute node (with the name from previous) to Set Selection with domain set to Face or Edge.

I made nodetools for making face sets up to 4 but easily expandable. Implemented Assign, Select, Select Linked, Clear and Regenerate (makes a mirrored copy of a face set / replaces chosen side with the other)

Thank you! yeah node tools seem valid, although it's simple but didn't occur in my mind until u mentioned it. very wise!

yeah I checked face wasn't requested but not face groups so I decided to bring it to the table ;) in 3ds max we could use smooth groups I guess as face groups to have that selection available (haven't used 3ds max for 3 years now)

Sure, but it's always better to focus on one well-made proposal and enhance that so to give it more chances to spearhead through, than posting dozens of similar proposals that have low potential of impact and all get drowned in the sea of proposal they just expanded.

Yes, I hope this gets addressed in RCS's future replacement. But in the meantime it is up to the active community members to kindly ask people to not feed the sea unnecessarily x)

All of this is solved using the new unified attribute system. blender.stackexchange.com/q/337742/142292

You don’t need to make 5-6 replies with that answer, Harry . ;)
