Sculpt: Scene Project brush (from the Sculpt Dev branch)

The sculpt dev branch is a branch that developers used to test and develop new sculpting features. Unfortunately, the branch is not in active development anymore, but it still has some very useful features that didn't made it to the main Blender version... so it would be great if they were ported to the main Blender...

One of the features is:

The Scene Project brush

We can think of the Scene Project brush as some sort of "shrinkwrap brush". It projects the sculpting mesh onto the objects in the scene...

See:

Very useful... 👌

Other features available in the Sculpt Dev branch:

This is great. Like zbrush.

Why they abandoned all those great features?

Again, much needed feature in the sculpting mode, we need it in Blender!

You can do this with the shrinkwrap modifier.

The speed and flexibility of it being a brush is a whole different story... 🙂

You can run a cloth simulation or use the cloth brush. You can use Box Trim or Line Project , or you can go out to use BoolTool. Just being able to do it one way doesn't rule out seeing if it is easier to have a brush. I mean, this already exists but needs to come into main.

Yes and no.

shrinkwrap can be used to project meshes and it can be used in the re-topology process, but there is a lot of limitations in it.

Shrinkwrap at this moment doesn't work 100% when the reference object contain overlapping meshes, things got confused in this areas.

That's why I even submit a ask for a better support for this scenario.

In my opinion, a brush will be faster because today Blender offers a lot of ways to do one thing, but some times the expected result have some problem or need some fix or workaround.

shrinkwrap for example can be used to this, but the result is not always the best, and have some problems like artifacts or weird projection when the reference object have overlapping meshes.

If Blender offers more focused solutions to each workflow, like this brush for the sculpting tab, people that is trying to find a alternative to a current application like ZB or something else, will fell more comfortable and eventually the number of artists using Blender for sculpting, painting, texturing, will be bigger, what means more money to the project itself.
